  • Worzel Gummidge

Barbara Euphan Todd, Jessica Martin, Naxos AudioBooks

Audible Audiobook (Naxos AudioBooks, June 27, 2017)
Spending their summer holidays with Farmer Braithwaite and his wife in Scatterbrook, John and Susan come across a particularly lifelike scarecrow in a nearby field. That evening, much to the children's surprise, the scarecrow makes an appearance in the Braithwaites' kitchen to warm himself by the fire. He is Worzel Gummidge and he is no ordinary scarecrow. His tendency to cause mayhem wherever he goes sparks a series of mishaps and adventures, often with hilarious results. This is the first of the Worzel Gummidge novels, originally published in 1936. Later, the Worzel Gummidge stories were adapted for radio and television, ranking among the top 50 greatest British children's programs, with Jon Pertwee (Doctor Who) playing the eponymous scarecrow, with a dedicated following to this day. Our audiobook is read by the multi-talented Jessica Martin, who infuses the stories with verve and excitement.

Charles Dickens, David Timson, Naxos AudioBooks

Audible Audiobook (Naxos AudioBooks, Sept. 17, 2018)
Charles Dickens was a master of the macabre. His stories of madness, murder and revenge, often imbued with a sympathetic moral undertone, have continued to thrill and chill fans ever since they were written. Here then are 15 tales that display the full range of Dickens' Gothic talents. "The Signalman," perhaps the most well-known, is a chilling story about a mysterious figure and its deathly omen; "The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain" shows the consequences for those who make deals with the dead; "The Portrait-Painter's Story" follows an artist who paints a non-living person by memory; and "Captain Murderer and the Devil's Bargain," a bedtime story from Dickens' own childhood, tells of a bloodthirsty man who kills his brides and bakes them into pies. Among others, the collection also includes "A Christmas Carol," "The Baron of Grogzwig" from "The Pickwick Papers," and "The Ghost in the Bride's Chamber," a novella co-written with Wilkie Collins.

The printing press, the telephone, powered flight, recording, and other innovations have made the modern world what it is. But what were the men who had these ideas and made realities of them like? As David Angus explains, they were very different: quiet, boisterous, confident, or withdrawn. But all had a moment of vision that they combined with single-minded determination to battle through numerous obstacles and produce something that really worked.
