  • The Secret Meadow: A Magical Place

Ms. Michelle Ann Duff, Ms. Pat Gangnon

Paperback (Mad Publishing, April 6, 2013)
The Secret Meadow is a magical place for twelve year old Jimmy to practise his archery skills using his new bow and arrow set received last Christmas. He soon tired of playing cowboys and Indians shooting an arrow at the old dilapidated shack in the corner of his meadow. While Jimmy was in the bush looking for a lost arrow a fox entered the meadow hunting mice. "Here is a real target," thought Jimmy. He took careful aim and let a n arrow fly. He never expected to hit the fox, but at the instant of impact Jimmy screamed in horror at what he had just done. He ran for home. Remorse and shame overwhelmed him, but two days later, with the help of his uncle's golden retriever, he tracked the fox back to her den. There he found her dead, but two of her new-born kits clung to life. He began a fast track learning curve about foxes determined to make amends for his selfish act, his goal to raise the two kits and release them back into the wild. The next twelve months would have a life-changing impact on young Jimmy's life. As vague as his immediate future seemed he would not falter in his efforts, but Animal Control and the Parks Commission created many obstacles for him. Could he repay the debt he owed to the fox whose life he took that day in his Secret Meadow by raising her two remaining kits?
