  • Enter Three Witches

    Kate Gilmore

eBook (KJG Publications, Nov. 7, 2013)
Bren wondered, but not for long, why his normally cheerful, easy-going life had suddenly begun to seem hopelessly complicated. He was learning to run the lights for his school’s production of Macbeth, but that was fun, and so was almost everything about his first serious relationship—everything except the fact that he couldn’t bring his girl friend home. Bren had never really minded living with three witches, but now he did. How could he explain that his beautiful mother spent hours casting spells in her bat-haunted tower room while his grandmother told fortunes to paying customers in the living room and their housekeeper raised black chickens in the garden apartment for uses it was best not to contemplate? His father, after getting up in the morning to find a baby bat in his shoe and a python in his shirt drawer—the culmination of a long series of such events—had exchanged the spacious old house for a simple, brick box on the East side.To make matters worse, Bren learned that Erika, his girl, had been cast as First Witch in Macbeth, so now he felt himself to be wallowing in witches. She was also not one to take no for an answer and soon bent an agile mind to unraveling the mystery of Bren’s family. When on opening night only Erika saw three figures outlined in blue fire at the balcony rail, the amazing technical effects that followed were explained, if only to her.“One of the most intelligently funny young-adult fantasies to come out in years…”—2/LOCUS May 1991“The combination of first romance and magic is a dynamic one, and Gilmore nimbly carries off the blend with wit and grace.”—Booklist, starred review

From what, he wasn't quite sure. His mother tried to keep him safe; a low profile, a constant move on the horizon, a week's pay always stashed away. She tried to instill in him that he was special somehow, though would never elaborate. He never felt different. He was so completely normal and vanilla that he wondered if it had all been in her head. But then she was murdered and all he saw was a running silhouette of a man as his mother said three final words to him. Three words that changed his whole being. Never stop running…Now he's semi-settled into a big town. The college is huge and easy to blend into. It's been three months since he had to move because 'Biloxi', as he calls the man who killed his mother, found him once more. Then Marley, an eighteen year old girl who is as infuriating as she is blissfully ignorant of her gorgeousness, smashes into his car with hers. Then smashes into his life as he realizes that whatever it is he has that Biloxi wants, she has it, too. And now, they're after them both.

  • Abol Ghassem of Tus: The Epic Journey of Abol Ghassem Bakhtiar, M.D.

    Laleh Bakhtiar, Lailee Bakhtiar

Paperback (Kazi Publications, Oct. 1, 2003)
Abol Ghassem Bakhtiar, M. D., a Bakhtiyari from the village of Borujen in Chahar Mahal, Iran (Persia), was a man of great character who struggled to obtain knowledge, who loved science and poetry, a man solid as a rock, a spiritual warrior of high moral character. His life bore witness to one's ability to accept the farr, often seen as the divine right of kings to rule, and transform it into the divine right of each individual to rule over himself. While living all of his life under the rule of a monarch, he himself concentrated on transforming the concept of the farr into a personal democracy. He completed his medical training in the United States at the age of 55, returning to Iran in 1931, as the first Iranian to be an American trained physician. He returned to Iran with an American wife, Helen Jeffreys. Helen, 22, when she married Abol Ghassem, was the first American to marry an Iranian in the United States and move to Iran. Her story is told in Helen of Tus: Her Odyssey from Idaho to Iran. They had 7 children. They were later divorced and Abol Ghassem married again at the age of 70 and had 10 more children, marrying a Bakhtiyari, Bibi Turan Zargham. This book contains the family genealogy of the Bakhtiyari family, descendants of Jafar Qoli Khan (d. 1836) printed here for the first time. Abol Ghassem died at the age of 99 and is buried in Tus, Iran because of a dream he had that one day his earth would mix with the earth of Ferdowsi, the great epic poet of Iran, and a hero would be born to save Iran. Abol Ghassem came into the world with nothing of material value, inheriting a Sufi cloak and a dervish bowl from his father. A century passed as Abol Ghassem evolved from a peddler, to a shopkeeper, to a tutor, to a student, to a doctor, to a hospital director, to Dean of the Medical School of Tehran University, to Chief Surgeon for the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. After a century of struggle, hard work and education, Abol Ghassem left this world with nothing of material value. His legacy for one and all is to educate yourself, to persevere through difficult times, to be good to others, to love and be loved, and to live life to the fullest, with plenty of fresh air, daily exercises, a clean body and mind stimulated with mythical and mystical poetry.

  • Young Muslim's Guide to the Modern World

    Seyyed Hossein Nasr

eBook (Kazi Publications, Nov. 29, 2013)
Through Muslim ’maps’ of the modern ’intellectual’ landscape, the author challenges two fronts: young Muslims to become familiar with their religion and cultural roots and to gain an understanding of the modern world from the Islamic point of view. This guide for the Muslim to the modern world—the first of its kind in any language—presents the eternal truths of Islam as well as Western religious and intellectual tradition as they confront each other in today’s world. The Islamic perspective is so unique that NPR (National Public Radio)’s Robert Siegel discussed the work with the author on the “All Things Considered” program.
