Strange things are happening in Sugarcreek, from stampeding pigs to barn explosions! Some locals place the blame on a new family in town, the Patels, originally from India. A few members of the community, in particular, are not happy about these newcomers—from the local diner owner whose business is threatened by the new competition to an odd, wet-behind-the-ears local reporter, to the owner of a local car dealership who is intent on breaking off his teenage son’s budding romance with the Patels’ daughter. Cheryl Cooper loves helping out a friend so when Naomi Miller asks for a ride to visit a sick relative, she is happy to comply. They make numerous stops along the way, including one to a large estate sale. When Cheryl’s attempts to buy a uniquely patterned quilt lead to a puzzling confrontation, she is more determined than ever to make it her own. Once she has her prized purchase, several attempts are made to steal the quilt, including a break-in at her home. Cheryl, determined to figure out what makes the quilt worth stealing, sets out to decipher its mysterious message. In the process, she stumbles across a twenty-year-old secret. With reputations and careers hanging in the balance, she must decide if searching for treasure is worth exposing the past.

When Albert Yoder is arrested for illegally transporting and selling raw milk across county lines, Cheryl and her mystery-solving sidekick Naomi step up to help. And just in time! Albert’s very pregnant wife has to be rushed to the hospital for an emergency C-section, leaving their six young daughters to milk the cows and care for the dairy farm. Things get more complicated as an environmentalist begins to picket at the Yoders’. Is he responsible for all the missing milk? Or is it the owner of the farm-to-table restaurant who wants it for his organic dishes? What about the crotchety neighbor across the road who has been in competition with them for years? Add in a strange English girl who has long-ago ties with Albert, along with a mysterious barn fire, and Cheryl and Naomi may have stumbled across a mystery too big for even them to solve.

Naomi needs to see a sick relative, and Cheryl is more than happy to drive her. Along the way, Cheryl buys a unique quilt from an estate sale. However, there appears to be a mystery behind this quilt; various attempts to steal it from her have been made, inspiring her to begin investigating its secrets. With people's reputations and lives on the line, Cheryl must decide whether or not revealing the past is worth hurting those in the present.
