    This charming cook helps children prepare for an international move. Written by Brenda Maxwell, an overseas schol teacher in Costa Rica, readers learn why children may fear a move, the positive apsects of an intercultural lifestyle and steps families can take to make the international transition less painful. The book invites the reader to answer questions and draw pictures. It should be required reading for those about to make an international move. A small section of advice for parents and a bibliography 0f other materials are appended to the text. Illustrated by Maxwell and Lara Murray, a 12 year old Third Culture Kid living in Portugal, "Up, Up and Away" makes a wonderful gift for young people know as TCK's, who are folowing their paretns around the world. TCKs are Third Culture Kids, children of business people, diplomats, military personnel and missionaries raised in a country(ies) other than that of their parents. No matter their nationality, they blend the cultures of their passport country with the countries of their existence and become truly multicultural. Therefore, they often find it easier to relate to others who have lived abroad than to those who have stayed close to their roots. "Up,Up and Away" guides these chidlren of the world through transition and adjustment on their international adventure. Not only for children, parents will benefit from reading this book as well, particularly to ease concerns about the long-term effects of this mobile lifestyle on their children. Maxwell addresses these concerns at a level that can be understood by young people and also in a sensitive section designed for their parents. Of course, as children confront a different language, new school system and changes in cultural expectations, families can expect bumps in the road. "Up, Up and Away" prepares families for these challenges uniques to the international mobile lifestyle. The book is relevant to readers of English from many different cultures.

It is to be used by educators or others to provide an environment where the value of living overseas is affirmed and to help integrate various international experiences. The book is compiled of 24 lesson plans that have all been used many times over with Foreign Service teenagers. The lesson plans are grouped into three sections: Managing transitions, personal development and perspectives on culture.
