  • The White Indian Boy: The Story of Uncle Nick Among the Shoshones

    Elijah Nicholas Wilson

eBook (Forest Publications, April 17, 2018)
What was life like to live among the Native Americans in the nineteenth century? At twelve years old Elijah Nicholas Wilson ran away from his family.Fighting off the constraints of his Mormon upbringing he found a new home with a Shoshone Indian tribe.Under their guidance, particularly of the Great Chief Washakie, he learned how to live and survive in the wild lands of the far west. But realising that he could not stay with his adopted family for ever he left the Shoshones and returned to his family as a teenager. Those lessons that he learnt from the Native Americans stayed with him for the rest of his eventful life when he worked as a Pony Express rider, stagecoach driver, trapper, and whatever other job he could do to support his familyHe never lost his connection with Native Americans and would frequently act as a translator and liaison between various tribes and the ever-encroaching United States. The White Indian Boy is a fascinating memoir of a young boys life spent with a Shoshone tribe and how their love and teachings greatly influenced him throughout his later life.Yet one account alone cannot answer the question of what life like to live among the Native Americans in the nineteenth century so the publisher has therefore included two other accounts of lives spent with Native American tribes in the nineteenth century, both with different subject matters and tones to Wilson’s account. The first is J. W. Schultz’s My Life as an Indian which covers his adult life with the Blackfeet, where he immersed himself in the ways of these Native Americans, assisting his friends in fighting rivals, hunting alongside them and even marrying Nat-ah’-ki, a Blackfoot woman. The second follows the life of Nelson Lee who was captured by the Comanches and sold as a slave between various warriors before he was eventually able to make his escape in the mid-nineteenth century.Together they should provide three different insights into what life was life among Native Americans in the nineteenth century.Elijah Nicholas Wilson was known as "Yagaiki" when among the Shoshones, and in his later years as "Uncle Nick" when entertaining young children with his adventurous exploits. His book was first published in 1910 and he passed away in 1915.
  • Voyager: Exploring the Outer Planets

Joan Marie Verba, Douglas R. Pratt, FTL Publications

Audible Audiobook (FTL Publications, Feb. 10, 2014)
In 1977, NASA launched the space probes Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 to explore Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. This audiobook tells of what was known about those planets and their moons before the Voyager missions, as well as what Voyager discovered about those planets and their moons. This audiobook is written for the middle-grade listener, and can be enjoyed by readers age 12 and up. NASA launched Voyager 1 and 2 in 1977. These flights of exploration greatly expanded our knowledge of the outer planets of the solar system. Verba gives a concise but fairly thorough description of the Voyager project from conception through the completion of the probes' photographic mission. Voyager begins with a brief discussion of the exploration of the solar system prior to the project... Each of the chapters on the outer planets begins by describing what was known before Voyager, followed by what new things we learned as a result of Voyager...The material is appropriate for interested 5th and 6th graders, but the vocabulary level is more at the 7th and 8th-grade level...this is a good account of the flights of Voyager 1 and 2 and what we learned from them.

  • If Picasso Had a Christmas Tree - Ebook: An illustrated introduction to art history for children by art teachers

    Eric Gibbons

eBook (Firehouse Publications, Sept. 9, 2014)
This e-book was conceived of, written by, illustrated by, and created by 30 art teachers from all over the world who share a passion for art history and teaching. Author Eric Gibbons began this project several years ago, but it seemed too daunting to complete alone. With the help of social media, he decided to collaborate with other art teachers by connecting through Facebook. This book is the result of that collaboration. Each teacher has emulated an artist of his/her choosing, and included a Christmas tree in a way that honors the work of that artist. Some took on more than one artist to bring you a total of 44 works of art. From the Renaissance to modern genres that may look little like a tree, these art teachers, elementary to high school, created these delightful illustrations to share. The contact information for every artist and the author is after the title of each original work of art, as well as a link to a webpage or where you can download and print lesson plans to extend student learning in the classroom or home school. ALL images in this book are NOT the work of the famous artists we have mentioned. These are emulations by art teachers with a Christmas tree theme. This is a common project in art classes around the world--to create an image in the style of a famous artist. We gather our work collectively here in the hopes to educate children of all ages about the rich traditions of art history, and hopefully to inspire our readers to learn more about these amazing artists as we attempt to honor them here!A paperback version is also available ISBN-10: 1940290333
