    Philip Sealey

    language (FeedARead, Aug. 7, 2011)
THOMAS KNIGHT believes in magic, especially at this time of year. But tonight, Tom will discover that magic is real as he is thrust into a world of mythical creatures, magical objects, evil sorcerers and very cold feet.Walking home after a Christmas party, the fourteen-year-old has an unfortunate encounter with a magic portal and is deposited in an ancient realm where mystical forces originated. In his attempt to get back to his own world, Tom meets an unemployed cleric who soon learns that Tom is a powerful hero, about whom the ancient Lost Scrolls were written centuries before. Tom enlists the help of a vampire with an affliction, a girl who is barking mad for a couple of days a month, a fairy with a masculinity complex and a weepy seer to help him get home, but he must first rid this world of its evil ruler, the Sorcerer Balfour, steal the source of his power, a book containing the most powerful magic and use it to open a portal back to his Berkshire home. • Buster, the Time-travelling Dog

    Brian Humphreys

    language (FeedARead, Dec. 8, 2014)
In Professor Bungle, I truly thought I had a friend fur-ever, until he fitted my time-travel collar. ‘Buster,’ he told me confidently, ‘one squeeze of this golden clasp will send you travelling in time, and if you squeeze it again, you will return to me.’ Before I could say, ‘Well I’ll be a mongrel’s uncle,’ he pressed the golden clasp. One minute, I was watching Bark to the Future, the next minute, I was spiralling through a funnel of warm air to a destination unknown. I was madder than a springer spaniel. ‘Just you wait until I get back,’ I howled into the dark cloud of warm air that engulfed me. ‘I’ve a good mind to report you to the Court of Mongrel Rights.’DISCLAIMER:The following adventures come straight from the mongrel’s mouth. The thoughts and opinions expressed in this book are Buster’s and not those of the author, who quite likes postmen and ginger cats.No dogs, postmen, or ginger cats were injured in the making of this book.

  • Acquisition of Word Formation Devices in First & Second Languages: Morphological Cross-linguistic Influence to L2 Learners

    Endri Shqerra

    eBook (FeedaRead.com, June 7, 2017)
Early school age English children acquire 3000 to 10000 words annually. It has been estimated that the main factors which account for the rapid vocabulary growth to early school age English children are context and word-formation knowledge. Using empirical research, the book puts side by side L1 and L2 acquisition of word-formation devices. First chapter explores the early acquisition of word-formation devices by English children, and presents the principles through which cross-linguistic influence diverts L2 learners from the natural way of acquiring word-formation devices of their target language. It also presents the ‘Dual Semantic Transparency’ Hypothesis in L2 acquisition. The second and third chapters utilize empirical evidences in examining the advanced acquisition of word-formation devices by both native speakers and L2 learners, as well as highlight the points in which morphological cross-linguistic transfer is more evident to L2 learners. The fourth chapter offers suggestions over the way L2 learners’ knowledge of word-formation devices of their target language can be improved. The book is targeted to anyone interested in language acquisition.
