silvabamba

Paperback
(Fefaron-Pitman, March 15, 1977)
This style of book is know in education as "high interest, low readability". That is a book written with about a third grade reading vocabulary, but at much higher interest level of 6th grade and above. A story of adventure and thrills that will grab even the most reluctant reader and make them want to keep to find out what happens next. The book cover says "Getting there had been easy, but getting out would be something else. In an unexplored world deep in the jungles of Peru, there is a lost world. Here there is a secret no one from the outside must ever learn. Now Frank Pellon and Ed Duval knew the secret of Silvabamba. If they could not find a way back out, they will pay with their lives for knowing." Got your interest yet? It works with students for whom reading, so far, has been difficult, boring, and about things not nearly as interesting. Your student will want to know the answers to questions such as what is a Silvabamba? Do the men ever get out alive? And how? This book is only one of many written in the style of "high interest, low readability" that can be found to help hook students into becoming readers, which is what we all want for them. These books are often used with students who are reading several years below grade level, reluctant readers, also with adult non readers or older non English language readers. The type of reader who can not easily be lured into reading about bunnies, princesses, or little kids. Once someone discovers the thrill of reading fiction like this, seeing the characters and setting in their mind's eye, controlling the colors and movement of the story, and not having to deal with commercials, they are hooked. From the outside it looks very adult, so no one will be embarrassed carrying it around. As you know, the more a person reads, the easier the process becomes. This is just the jumping off place for a life time of reading enjoyment, especially for your reluctant reader. Bon Voyage.
