Why does Hamilton Troll live next to a tree stump? Chatterton Squirrel asks this question one spring day, so Hamilton shares the story about how this whole thing began. While trying to stay warm one cold December morning, a loud rumbling noise brought Hamilton out of his hole to discover his tree was gone! In order to solve the mystery of the missing tree, Hamilton and Merle Mouse go to Rachel Raccoon for help. Rachel then tells everyone about Christmas and explains why Hamilton's tree was taken. Curious about this, Hamilton decides to go see what this day is all about and in doing so, discovers the magic of Christmas.

Surprise! Looking up to the sky watching ducks fly by, Hamilton sees something he has never seen before; another troll! Hamilton suddenly realizes he's not the only troll in the world. Leaping at the chance to learn more, he begs Starlit to stay for a while then introduces her to all of his friends. The next day, he can't find her and he begins to worry. The search for the missing troll is only the first challenge. When they approach Hamilton's picnic, there's another surprise.

Rudy is not a very nice rat according to Rosa Raccoon and the other children. He does bad things and says mean stuff and no one wants to play with him. So Hamilton decides to have a talk with Rudy. However, when Rudy Rat sees Hamilton Troll, he gets so afraid he runs off, which clues in Hamilton that Rudy may need a friend more than they thought. Hamilton then encourages the children to put their "PAWS" together for friendship. Pause what you are doing, Approach, Welcome Rudy to join the game and Smile. Rudy then feels accepted and is able to hang out with the children and have fun, creating friends rather than enemies. The Troll Patrol encourages you to be accepting. When you are nice to others, invite them to play and care about their feelings; friendships grow.
