Jerry has ambitions of going to college and gets accepted into a predominantly white school, Bucknell University. His quest for furthering his education is hindered by negative influences and expectations which predict an outcome of failure. As he struggles with his insecurities and doubts his intellectual abilities, he finds himself on an unusual journey that will lead him to his dreams and ambitions. On this journey he discovers the fulfillment of a dream, the power of believing, and what it means to be poor, Black and full of ambition. And at the end of this journey, he discovers that the journey is never ending. To put it simply, imaging the proud moment when your child gets accepted into college. The first semester goes by and his grades consist of straight “D”s. Imaging what your child is feeling and what you are feeling. You feel so bad that you want to cry. You ask yourself, “What happened?” He goes back for the second semester. At the end of that semester your child gets all “A”s and “B”s. Again, you want to cry. But this time it tears of joy. You ask yourself, “What happened?” Reaching for the Moon is this story. This is a touching story that describes some of the innermost feelings and dreams that can be experienced.
