  • The Super-Secret Science Club: Case of the Disappearing Glass

    S.C. Davis

language (Bright Mind Publications, July 6, 2016)
I’ll never forget my science teacher’s words the day he recruited us as spies:"I’m a member of a secret organization called the Rosalind Group, whose original mission was to find and prevent cases of stolen scientific research. But one day, everything changed, and I didn’t understand why. Eventually, I figured it out…we weren't the good guys anymore…the Rosalind Group is no longer protecting scientists from having their research stolen. We’re now the ones who are stealing it."Apparently research wasn’t all they were stealing; they were stealing the scientists themselves! I suppose “kidnapping” is the proper word. And that’s where we came in. Six science-savvy seventh graders. One missing scientist. And the need for some serious out-smarting.But there’s just one more mystery involved: how was I supposed to do this without lying to everyone I know? I was sworn to secrecy…but I ended up breaking my promise.“Case of the Disappearing Glass” is the first book in the Super-Secret Science Club series. Follow Jenna and her classmates as they unravel mysteries and tackle critical missions, all while trying to survive middle school!
  • The Super-Secret Science Club: The Secrets of Rosalind

    S.C. Davis

Paperback (Bright Mind Publications, Sept. 28, 2016)
What's worse than being in seventh grade, and trying to solve a kidnapping? Being in seventh grade, and trying to solve TWO kidnappings. Especially when one of those is your own teacher. The very same one who got you into this spy business in the first place. Lucky for me and the other five members of the Super-Secret Science Club (we call it the S3C for short), help arrived right when we needed it: the day we realized Mr. Gregory wasn’t just on vacation. Her name is Claire, and what she told us that day is what set everything in motion for the biggest stunt we’d ever pulled in our twelve years on this planet. There’s just one tiny problem: I sort of got myself kicked out of the S3C. Sure, I deserved it. But when the night of the Gala arrived—the night we were going to take down the Rosalind Group and rescue Dr. Wyatt and Mr. Gregory—I found something. I know they told me to stay away. But I couldn’t let my friends walk head first into danger. Not when the discovery I had just made was the only way to protect them. “The Secrets of Rosalind” is the second book in the Super-Secret Science Club series. Follow Jenna and her classmates as they unravel mysteries and tackle critical missions, all while trying to survive middle school!

  • Then Like The Blind Man | ORBIE'S STORY: An Electrifying Portal To The Jim Crow South Of The 1950s

    Freddie Owens

eBook (Blind Sight Publications, Nov. 26, 2013)
While fiction about the 1950s Civil Rights era is far from rare, few capture the period and struggles from the perspective of a white child. Synopsis: At nine, Orbie seems to live his life along a precipice. He is burdened with an overabundance of difficult choices which would be beyond the capacities of most boys his age--but Orbie is about to discover he's no ordinary boy. In the debut novel from artist and poet Freddie Owens, nothing is ever precisely what it seems: prejudice is not innate, the dead aren't really dead, and those in positions of power cannot be trusted. Orbie finds himself deposited at his grandparent's home in Kentucky one summer, his stepfather, Victor, having had a change of heart about including him on a family prospecting trip to Florida. Except "heart" doesn't seem, to Orbie, quite the right word to apply to his stepfather, whose tempestuous temper took him from the widowed family's salvation to its most dangerous element in one outburst flat. Then Like The Blind Man: ORBIE'S STORY is an electrifying porthole to the South of the '50s, where, though inane prejudice may have dominated, kindness and justice also had a place. Orbie's sharecropping grandparents, by defying convention with unnerving grace, become founts of colloquial wisdom whose appeal is impossible to resist, and the Orbie they nurture--the best version of a boy who may otherwise have been lost--is someone the reader comes to love. • Victory in Papua

    Samuel Milner

eBook (Brier Publications, Dec. 17, 2018)
Costly in casualties and suffering, [this campaign] taught lessons that the Army had to learn if it was to cope with the Japanese under conditions of tropical warfare.By mid-1942 the Japanese forces were threatening to take the colonial capital of Port Moresby and therefore gain a base to launch their proposed invasion of Australia. The allied forces needed to blunt the Japanese thrust toward Australia and thus protect the transpacific line of communications, as well as to secure a favorable position to take the offensive to the Japanese.Yet this was easier planned than executed; the Australians had been battered through two years of combat with their enemies and although the Americans were bringing large numbers of reinforcements, they were living under intolerable conditions, plagued by disease, short of equipment, ill-prepared for jungle fighting, and pitted against a skilled and resolute foe.According to Australian military historian, John Laffin, the campaign "was arguably the most arduous fought by any Allied troops during World War II".Milner uncovers every aspect of the campaign in 1942 from its early planning stages through to the many conflicts with Japanese troops that culminated in the brutal Battle of Buna-Gona in early 1943. However, rather than simply giving an overview of these turbulent months Milner focuses particularly on the actions of the 32nd Infantry Division who were at the frontline of the offensive to give the reader a direct view of what life was like during the campaign. To develop a picture of this dramatic campaign Milner drew from not only the official records but also spoke to men who were there and saw it, including Robert L. Eichelberger, as well as drawing from many Australian sources and historians.“Samuel Milner’s Victory in Papua, the official U.S. Army history, provides a thorough narrative of the Papua New Guinea campaign and is an excellent starting point.” Major Matthew H. Fath, Intrepidity, Iron Will, and Intellect: General Robert L. Eichelberger and Military Genius“a solid and valued work.” James Jay Carafano“a thorough account of the actions of the 32nd Division in the Papuan campaign of 1942.” Henry L. Roberts, Foreign Affairs“In telling the story of a comparatively limited number of troops, the author has been able to present the combat experience of small units in sharper focus than has been possible in most of the other full-scale campaign volumes.” Maj. Gen. A. C. Smith, Chief of Military HistorySamuel Milner was a historian who held a graduate degree in history from the University of Alberta and had done further graduate work in political science at the University of Minnesota. He had served during the war as a historian with the Army Air Transport Command in Australia and New Guinea, and worked for the Army office of the chief of military history after the war. After this he worked as government historian for many years before passing away in 2000. His book Victory in Papua was first published in 1957.
  • The Brothers Schlemiel: The Unabridged Novel of Chelm

    Mark Binder, Light Publications

Audiobook (Light Publications, Oct. 28, 2013)
This is the beginning of The Brothers Schlemiel, from Birth to Bar Mitzvah. It tells the story of Abraham and Adam Schlemiel from the chaotic day they were born through their completely confusing bar mitzvah. The eight installments include "A Passover Question" and meetings with Rabbi Kibbitz, Mrs. Chaipul and the notorious robber, Boris Krabot. Narrated by the author, who is also an award-winning story performer, this audiobook is beautifully read and performed. Meet Abraham and Adam. From the day they are born, "those Schlemiel twins" are trouble. No one, not even their parents, can tell them apart, which is sometimes an advantage. Set in Chelm, the famed village of fools, The Brothers Schlemiel is both a tightly interwoven story of two lives, and a rambling picaresque novel filled with rich characters.

  • A Taste of the Afterlife: A culinary comedy with a sci-fi twist

    Jeremy Abrams

    eBook (mind2mind publications, Dec. 15, 2018)
Clara Feutageaux is beginning her first day as an algebra teacher at Emerson High School. But she has worn an outfit that resembles the school uniform, and she can't quite convince her students that she's their teacher.Meanwhile, across town, sous chef Toby Blue has gotten into an argument with Chief Chef Crevoillet (or "chef Croissant" as he is called in the kitchen) over their conflicting culinary styles. Toby quits out of principle, and soon finds himself running the school cafeteria at Emerson - also his very own alma mater. As Clara gains her footing in her first adult role, and she and her identical twin sister Carla gently untangle the Feutageaux family secrets, which include a step-father who may be a little more than kin and less than kind, they are guided by the memory of their father Edwin Feutageaux, a man with a great heart, but not a healthy one.And as Toby feels his way toward an understanding of his true culinary style, and of his true self, his journey is guided by the memory of his departed mother Darla, the lady who gave him his love of cooking. When Clara and Toby each encounter a mysterious portal that takes them not to another world, but across the universe and back again in an instant, leaving them transformed into observers of themselves, it sets in motion a comedy of errors involving a perpetual motion machine, wads of cash and white powder that may (or may not) be what they seem, a student body that protests in favor of stricter standards, a foolproof method of winning at blackjack, and a femme fatale who seeks out bad boys but keeps ending up with good ones. And at the same time, the portal creates the setting for a parallel tale, one that offers a serene and surprising mediation on the nature of the afterlife.
