  • Sitting in the Sandbox: A rhyming book

    Molly Lovinggood, Katya Plaxina

    Paperback (Molly's Bookshelf, Aug. 10, 2017)
Sitting in the Sandbox is a rhyming book for beginning readers. The story is shows what children observe around them as they play. Not only do they see animals and birds but also people, lawn equipment, and, of course, their mothers. This little book builds awareness of the world as well as new words and sounds. Words that rhyme help children learn by listening and seeing, as well as remembering each line of the story. The story uses two methods to help children learn reading skills. First, the repetition of “Sitting in the Sandbox” helps children anticipate story lines and what they may hear next. This is a great opportunity for learners to recognize letters, sounds, and words as they read the story on their own. Second, the use of rhyming words helps children remember what they read. Take the opportunity to encourage children to read and repeat the sentence aloud. This reinforces letter and word recognition. Encourage learners to have fun making up more rhyming words … and to keep reading!
