This collection of Japanese fairy tales is the outcome of a suggestion made to me indirectly through a friend by Mr. Andrew Lang. They have been translated from the modern version written by Sadanami Sanjin. These stories are not literal translations, and though the Japanese story and all quaint Japanese expressions have been faithfully preserved, they have been told more with the view to interest young readers of the West than the technical student of folk-lore.

The children's book "Flovely – Adventures in Castleland" is a lovely children's story to be read out loud. With her best friend Flirty Flovely goes on an exciting journey through a land of ancient castles and colourful forests.Together with the two rabbits Heino and Hilde the friends build huts, discover treasures and meet new friends. Their constant companion is an old hay wagon on which they drag their luggage through the country. Both exciting and entertaining it is just the right story for children aged 3-8 years.

The Poison Belt was the second story, a novella, that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote about Professor Challenger. Written in 1913, roughly a year before the outbreak of World War I, much of it takes place in a single room in Challenger's house — rather oddly, given that it follows The Lost World, a story set in the jungle. This would be the last story written about Challenger until the 1920s, by which time Doyle's spiritualist beliefs had begun to influence his writing.

The cheerful adventure story tells of an exciting outing on a boat with Flovely and her friends. Positive character traits like friendship, team spirit and trust are essential in the story and are conveyed to the children playfully. Together with her friends Flovely makes an adventurous boat trip on the rainbow river. As a team the friends repair the old houseboat, make new friends and build a great pirate's camp at a wonderful beach.
