  • Illustrated Hawaiian Dictionary

    Kahikahealani Wight, Robin Yacoma

eBook (Bess Press Inc., April 14, 2011)
The new eBook edition is an ideal resource for beginning speakers and students of the Hawaiian language or anyone interested in Hawaiian language history and culture. Illustrated with line drawings, it includes over 5,000 entries in Hawaiian and English and an additional 2,500 synonyms and related words, phrases, grammar notes, and thousands of example sentences in both Hawaiian and English that illustrate practical and cultural uses of the language.Hawaiian is a very demanding language for most people. Even if your interest only goes to understanding chants and songs and translating the names of streets and surf spots you cant get by on what people just happen to say they know. You need to look it up and you'll want to look it up in several places to get the whole picture. That would be the No. 1 reason for picking up a copy of the eBook edition "Illustrated Hawaiian Dictionary" by Kahikahealani Wight illustrated by Robin Yoko Racoma. The standard Hawaiian Dictionary by Mary Kawena Pukui and Samuel H. Elbert is an excellent book. You should certainly have that in your library but at around $33 its quite an investment.Still purely as a dictionary time itself has created and in a sense also revealed the weakness of the Pukui-Elbert book. To get modern terminology and words for foreign objects and places you need to add Mamaka Kaiao by the Hawaiian Lexicon Committee. There you have one of the weaknesses and paradoxically one of the strengths of Wight's Illustrated Hawaiian Dictionary. That's because in this new book the availability of contemporary-word translations is not always a two-way street. In the English-to-Hawaiian section for example television is translated as kiwi with macrons over both vowels. In the Hawaiian-to-English section no such word is listed. Still that's the direction most of us will usually need to go with modern terms so it becomes the second big reason to buy this dictionary.Since this is an illustrated eBook it would be inappropriate not to mention the illustrations. What's more the drawings by Racoma are the No. 3 reason to buy the book. The pictures are nicely done. I can't say that they really help with the definitions in the way that the few illustrations in a Columbia or Websters might but they may help attract youthful attention. That's enough to ask of them.If you don't have a Hawaiian dictionary start with this one. It is very affordable and will serve you well for a long time. You can graduate to multiple dictionaries later. By then you'll want to replace your worn hard copy of Wight's Illustrated Hawaiian Dictionary with this eBook version.
  • Commodore Hornblower

    C. S. Forester

eBook (eNet Press Inc., April 27, 2011)
We again find Captain Horatio Hornblower in this the 9th volume, chronologically, of the Hornblower Saga, off on a new adventure to the Baltic in 1812, when Napoleon's army marches into Russia. He comes through raids, assignations, a siege, an attempted assassination by a member of his crew , and typhus, seeking success but not notoriety, while his introspection sometimes overwhelms him. According to his biographer, Hornblower's swift actions using ungainly bomb-ketches, landed marines and his naval insight for strategy and tactics probably had major influences on the retreat of Napoleon from Russia. Another great read.

  • Dear and Glorious Physician

    Taylor Caldwell

eBook (eNet Press Inc., March 17, 2012)
Today St. Luke is known as the author of the third Gospel of the New Testament, but nearly two thousand years ago he was Lucanus, a Greek, and a man of science. Taylor Caldwell portrays him as a man who loved, knew the emptiness of bereavement, and later traveled through the hills and wastes of Judea asking, "What manner of man was my Lord?" It is this Lucanus that Caldwell brings to life in her stirring novel. Lucanus grew up in the household of his stepfather, the Roman governor of Antioch. He studied medicine in Alexandria and became one of the greatest physicians of the ancient world, traveling far and wide through the Mediterranean region healing the sick. When Lucanus heard of the life and death of Jesus, he saw in Him the God he was seeking. To learn all he could about Jesus, whom he had never seen, Lucanus visited all the places where Jesus had been, questioning everyone who had known Him or heard Him preach, including His mother, Mary. When he had gathered all the information possible, he wrote what we now know as the Gospel according to St. Luke. Caldwell's own travels through the Holy Land and years of meticulous research make Dear and Glorious Physician a fully developed portrait of a complex and brilliant man and a colorful re-creation of ancient Roman life as it contrasted in its decadence with the new world that Christianity was bringing into being. Here is a story to warm, to inspire, and to call forth a renewal of faith and love.

Hardcover (Bess Press, Inc, Oct. 10, 2011)
Hawai'i in the 1970s was a vibrant time; a Hawaiian Renaissance was being led, in part, by the renewed popularity of and interest in hula as an integral part of Hawaiian culture. The Hula was originally written by Jerry Hopkins in 1978, with assistance from Rebecca Kamili'ia Erikson, and it has been a significant narrative on the dance form ever since. Hopkins's book was the first to offer readers a comprehensive history of hula aimed at a general audience. Three decades later, The Hula has not been superseded. This reissue of The Hula has been updated and edited by Hawaiian music and hula expert Amy Ku'uleialoha Stillman and enhanced by poignant photographs and graphics, makes an overview of hula once again available to new generations of hula dancers, cultural enthusiasts and fans alike. This revised edition incorporates the same graphics as the original, but has been completely redesigned.
