They are sad and miss their father on Christmas as he is away serving as Union chaplain in the Civil War. Their mother, Marmee, encourages them to be cheerful, kind and benevolent. The girls want to improve themselves as they grow up. They help the neighbouring family and are helped by Mr. Laurence in return. Their fights, outings, heartbreaks and adventures are revealed as the story progresses on.

This story covers the life of three young boys – fifteen year old Ralph (who is also the narrator), eighteen year old Jack and fourteen year old Peterkin, who are shipwrecked and hence stranded on a South Sea island. They have an abundant supply of food and the trio explore the island and the surrounding ones leisurely. But trouble begins when a party of cannibals arrives and soon after a pirate ship. The boys retreat to their safe place. When Ralph goes out to check, he is captured by the pirates.

The story takes the readers on a thrilling journey through the deep waters. The stylish realistic illustrations in the book are edgy and contemporary but not without the charm that is essentially classic!
