  • Across Tides of Time: a story for teenagers and young people

    Chris Woodhead

Paperback (Arena Books Ltd, Dec. 31, 2019)
Lucy, a young girl struggling a little with the pressures of growing up in the modern world, finds her rather solitary life changed for ever one bitterly cold winters' morning by an unexpected meeting with a strange furry creature, whom she accompanies on his quest to find a new home for his family, far away from the rapidly disappearing woodlands in which they live. The journey takes Lucy and her two large black dogs through a forest kingdom filled with fearsome predators still engaged in the struggles between good and evil within a natural world that humans have long since left behind. They venture into a future world where magic and mathematics have combined to create swirling eddies of time within which time itself is testing possible outcomes to the some of the problems that the advance of technology is creating in Lucy's world. Little distinction remains between truth and fiction, between real and virtual lives, and technology has made much of what it meant to be human obsolete. Lucy has the challenge of finding where power lies and thereby extricate herself and discover a way to return to her imperfect present world in the past and which perhaps still has the time to solve its problems and avoid the outcomes that the future has in store.Lucy's journey and those she meets on the way challenges her to reassess some of her own assumptions and teaches her that not everyone thinks as she does, nor believes what she believes, and that her truth is only one truth amongst many.

  • Friends in High Places

    Donna Leon

Paperback (Arrow Books Ltd, March 1, 2001)
Venetian cop, Commissario Guido Brunetti, wonders whom he knows to bring pressure on a local government department, to investigate the lack of official building approval on his apartment. But when that same official phones him at work, clearly scared by some information he plans to give Brunetti, and is later found dead after a fall from scaffolding, something is clearly wrong, something with far greater implications than the fate of Guido's own apartment. Brunetti's investigations take him into the unfamiliar areas of Venetian life - drug abuse and loan sharking - while the deaths of two young drug addicts, and the arrest and release of a suspected drug dealer, reveal, once again, what a difference it makes in Venice to have 'Friends in High Places'.

  • Egalitarianism of the Free Society

    Robert Corfe

Paperback (Arena Books Ltd, Feb. 4, 2008)
The transformation of society and the world of work, in the industrialised countries over the past 60 years, have overtaken political systems in the democratic world. The old left/right political divide, which has marked the pattern of socio-economic struggle since 1789, has now ceased to be a useful tool in advancing the progress of humanity. This book presents the new realities in the spheres of social life, as an introduction to the author's forthcoming 3-volume work on Social Capitalism, which concentrates on the shattering economic and political changes in the contemporary world. What is to be the future of society if it is to advance in any meaningful sense? If society is to be egalitarian and at the same time free, it will need to ditch the ideologies of the past which so inspired our forebears. The book opens with 6 chapters discussing the role of high culture in a society where class associations have been minimised and elitism takes on quite a different meaning. In an upwardly aspiring society, and under a changed educational system, the best would be available for all in the practical democracy of the future. There then follow 11 chapters on the nature of property, which is projected as an individual right in fulfilling psychological needs. The political consequences are that property is presented as something contradicting its concept as understood in the traditional thinking of left or right wing politics. The practical implications of property are considered in their different life situations in separate chapters. Democracy, real or illusory, is discussed in 7 chapters, and historical arguments are evoked in exploring the erroneous beliefs and myths on the nature of freedom. The book concludes with 12 important chapters analysing those adverse intellectual influences in the 20th century responsible for undermining constructive thought in enabling a better world.
