Guiding the way are some of literature's most beguiling characters: the Russian brothers plagued by memories of a fateful sleigh ride, Ántonia's desperately homesick father and self-indulgent mother, and the coy Lena Lingard. The first year farming the harsh but fertile land leaves strong lifelong impressions on both children. My Ántonia was enthusiastically received in 1918 when it was first published. It was considered a masterpiece and placed Cather in the forefront of novelists. Cather was praised for bringing the American West to life and making it personally interesting. It brought place forward almost as if it were one of the characters, while at the same time playing upon the universality of the emotions, which in turn promoted regional American literature as a valid part of mainstream literature. This cloth-bound book includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket, and is limited to 100 copies.

It is a profound nostalgia for a lost time that Jim now also holds dear as he recalls all that he left behind and that which he’ll never lose.Set against a defining and reflecting midwestern landscape—melancholic, nurturing, and changeable—My Ántonia is a celebration of an enduring friendship and a moving tribute to the courage and resolve of pioneering immigrants.AmazonClassics brings you timeless works from the masters of storytelling. • My Antonia

    Willa Cather, Patrick Lawlor

    2003 (Tantor Audio, Feb. 1, 2003)
After the death of his parents, Jim Burden is sent to live with his grandparents on the Nebraska plains. By chance, on that same train is Ántonia, a bright-eyed girl who will become his neighbor and lifelong friend. Her family has emigrated from Bohemia to start a new life farming but soon lose their money and must work hard just to survive. Through it all, Ántonia retains her natural pride and free spirit. Jim's grandparents have a large and tidy farm. They are kind to him, but conventional. Later, Jim becomes a scholar and Ántonia becomes a "hired girl" in town. She blossoms in the new freedom that town life offers. Jim can only taste this life vicariously through her recounting of town gossip and of the "dance tent." Ántonia's strong will, spirit, and honesty allow her to thrive in the midst of hardship. In My Ántonia, Willa Cather paints a rich picture of life on the prairie at the beginning of the twentieth century and depicts some of the many cultures that came to compose the United States.
  • My Ántonia

Willa S. Cather, Zynnia A. Jezek

Hardcover (Distinct Press, Jan. 7, 2017)
My Ántonia, published in 1918, is arguably the most famous work of American novelist Willa Cather. The novel takes the form of a fictional memoir written by Jim Burden about a Czech immigrant girl named Ántonia with whom he grew up in the American West. Cather, like her character Jim, moved to Nebraska when she was ten years old, and she bases many of the events, characters, and settings of the novel on her own childhood experiences. My Ántonia is a great reminder that the stories of pioneering, heroic men would not have been possible without the strength of the women who stood beside them. The text of this edition follows that of the 1918 edition, with minor emendations, added footnotes and new illustrations.

  • My Antonia - The Troll Garden - Selected Short Stories

    Willa Cather

Leather Bound (Dorset Press, Aug. 16, 1995)
Willa Sibert Cather (1873 - 1947) was an American author who achieved recognition for her novels of frontier life on the Great Plains, including O Pioneers! (1913), The Song of the Lark (1915), and My Ántonia (1918). In 1923 she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for One of Ours (1922), a novel set during World War I. This book includes three Cather novels: 1) My Ántonia (1918) - is the final book of her "prairie trilogy" of novels, preceded by O Pioneers! and The Song of the Lark. The novel tells the stories of an orphaned boy from Virginia, Jim Burden, and the elder daughter in a family of Bohemian immigrants, Ántonia Shimerda, who are each brought to be pioneers in Nebraska towards the end of the 19th century, as children. Both the pioneers who first break the prairie sod for farming, as well as of the harsh but fertile land itself, feature in this American novel. The first year in the very new place leaves strong impressions in both children, affecting them lifelong. This novel is considered as Cather's first masterpiece. Cather was praised for bringing the American West to life and making it personally interesting; 2) The Troll Garden (1905) - a collection of short stories; and 3) Selected Short Stories including The Burglar's Christmas, Eric Hermannson's Soul, the Bohemian Girl, and The Sentimentality of William Tavener.
