  • The Tragedy of Macbeth

    William Shakespeare

Hardcover (Throne Classics, July 9, 2019)
Macbeth is among the best-known of William Shakespeare's plays, and is his shortest tragedy, believed to have been written between 1603 and 1606. It is frequently performed at both amateur and professional levels, and has been adapted for opera, film, books, stage and screen. Often regarded as archetypal, the play tells of the dangers of the lust for power and the betrayal of friends. For the plot Shakespeare drew loosely on the historical account of King Macbeth of Scotland by Raphael Holinshed and that by the Scottish philosopher Hector Boece. There are many superstitions centred on the belief the play is somehow "cursed", and many actors will not mention the name of the play aloud, referring to it instead as "The Scottish play".

Paperback (Independently published, Aug. 8, 2020)
Macbeth tells a story of crime and punishment intertwined with witchcraft and supernatural elements. Sheltered in the deceptive prophecies of the Fateful Sisters, witches or goddesses of destiny, Macbeth decides to assassinate his king and take the crown. Aware of the horror to which he surrenders himself, he forges his terrible destiny and allows himself to be possessed by the evil that is born from the lust for power, believing himself invincible and eternal. This dark and haunting work, with dizzying action, is also deeply introspective. Through a metaphorical and sensory language, the work investigates the forbidden, explores transgression and offers the unique opportunity to share the inner life of a murderer, with its horror and mystery. In the introductory study, Ángel-Luis Pujante reveals the meaning of this set of symbols, primitivism and the magical concept of the world they represent, and clarifies how Macbeth's poetic and intellectual height does not hide or soften the concrete political situation of blood and blood. violence, ambition and disloyalty in which the action unfolds.

  • The Tragedy of Macbeth

    William Shakespeare

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Feb. 19, 2019)
Excerpt from The Tragedy of MacbethIn the warwick shakespeare an attempt is made to present the greater plays of the dramatist in their literary aspect, and not merely as material for the study of philology or grammar. Criticism purely verbal and textual has only been included to such an extent as may serve to help the student in his appreciation of the essential poetry. Questions of date and literary history have been fully dealt with in the Introductions, but the larger space has been devoted to the interpretative rather than the matter-of-fact order of scholar ship. Aesthetic judgments are never final, but the Editors have attempted to suggest points of view from which the analysis of dramatic motive and dramatic character may be profitably undertaken. In the Notes likewise, while it is hoped that all unfamiliar expressions and allusions have been adequately explained, yet it has been thought even more important to consider the dramatic value of each scene, and the part which it plays in relation to the whole. These general principles are common to the whole series; in detail each Editor is alone responsible for the plays intrusted to him.Every volume of the series has been provided with a Glossary, an Essay upon Metre, and an Index; and Appen dices have been added upon points of special interest, which could not conveniently be treated in the Introduction or the Notes. The text is based by the several Editors on that of the Globe edition: the only omissions made are those that are unavoidable in an edition likely to be used by young students.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
