  • The Pathfinder; Or, The Inland Sea

    James Fenimore Cooper

    eBook (, June 9, 2020)
While James Fenimore Cooper’s 1840 novel "The Pathfinder" is the fourth installment in "The Leatherstocking Tales" series, the action takes place third chronologically. Set amongst the wilderness of the Great Lakes region of the United States during the French and Indian War, "The Pathfinder" is a classic tale of early American frontiersman Natty Bumpo in which he finds himself rather uncharacteristically falling in love, a romance which pits him against his fundamental mission in life. "The Pathfinder" is a classic tale of early American life, which Cooper himself considered one of his best.

  • The Pathfinder, or the Inland-Sea, Vol. 1 of 2

    James Fenimore Cooper

Hardcover (Forgotten Books, Dec. 7, 2017)
Excerpt from The Pathfinder, or the Inland-Sea, Vol. 1 of 2 The plan of this tale is old, having suggested itself to the writer many years since; though the details are altogether of recent invention. The idea of associating seamen and savages, in incidents' that might be sup posed characteristic of the Great Lakes, having been mentioned to a publisher, the latter obtained something like a pledge from the Author, to carry out the design at some future day; which pledge is now tardily and imperfectly redeemed. The reader may recognize an old friend, under new circumstances, in the principal character of this legend. If it should be found that the exhibition made of this old acquaintance, in the novel circumstances in which he appears, shall not lessen his favour with the public, it will be a source of extreme gratification to the writer, since he has an interest in the individual in question, that falls little short of reality. It is not an easy task, however, to introduce the same character in four separate works, and to maintain the peculiari ties 'that are indispensable to identity, without incur ring a risk of fatiguing the reader with sameness; and the present experiment has been so long delayed, quite as'much from doubts of its success as from any other cause. In this, as in every other undertaking, it must be the end that will crown the work. The Indian character has so little variety, that it has been an object to. Avoid dwelling on it too much. Vigorous, self-reliant, amazingly resourceful, and moral, Natty Bumppo is the prototype of the Western hero. A faultless arbiter of wilderness justice, he hates middle-class hypocrisy. But he finds his love divided between the woman he has pledged to protect on a treacherous journey and the untouched forest that sustains him in his beliefs. A fast-paced narrative full of adventure and majestic descriptions of early frontier life, Indian raiders, and defenseless outposts, The Pathfinder set the standard for epic action literature.
