Sense and Sensibility is a sharply detailed portraiture of the decorum surrounding courtship and the importance of marriage for women in early-nineteenth-century upper-class English society. The story revolves around Elinor and Marianne Dashwood who, as members of the upper class, cannot work for a living and must therefore make a suitable marriage to ensure their livelihood. Elinor is a sensible, rational creature, while her younger sister, Marianne, is wildly romantic a characteristic that offers Austen plenty of scope for both satire and compassion.

Jane Austen crafts a romance story of two middleclass daughters seeking marriage and happiness. They have a disadvantage in that they have no wealth of their own to attract a husband. The sensitive characters are painted as being amiable, generous and near sighted; the practical characters are drawn to show no presumption of future happiness; and the caring characters are presented as generous and well meaning with altruistic motives. The insensitive characters are inserted in a way that inflicts a maximum of injury to those who can least defend themselves; in the end the mean and insensitive get their just deserts. Austen weaves the plot with these personae to create a charming picture of 19th century England.
