Frank Baum's Oz series. It was the first in which Baum was clearly intending a series of Oz books. It is the first Oz book where the majority of the action takes place outside of the Land of Oz. Only the final two chapters take place in Oz itself.[2] This reflects a subtle change in theme: in the first book, Oz is the dangerous land through which Dorothy must win her way back to Kansas; in the third, Oz is the end and aim of the book. Dorothy's desire to return home is not as desperate as in the first book, and it is her uncle's need for her rather than hers for him that makes her return. It was illustrated throughout in color by artist John R. Neill. The book bore the following dedication: "To all the boys and girls who read my stories – and especially to the Dorothys – this book is lovingly dedicated."
  • Ozma of Oz - MP3 CD Audiobook

    L. Frank Baum, Phil Chenevert

MP3 CD Library Binding (MP3 Audiobook Classics, Jan. 1, 2015)
Ozma of Oz (1907) was the third in the Oz series of books by L. Frank Baum and the first that is set largely outside the Land of Oz. Dorothy and her Uncle Henry are en route to Australia when a violent storm washes Dorothy overboard in a crate with Billina, a yellow hen. When they wash ashore, she senses they are in some sort of “fairy country”, because Billina can talk and they pick their lunch from a “lunch pail tree”. They meet the raucous “Wheelers”, creatures with wheels in place of hands and feet, and run off to find a key beside a door carved into the side of a rocky mountain. Venturing inside, they meet Tik-Tok, a mechanical man with three clockwork motors for thought, motion, and speech. They activate him with the key and learn they are in the Land of Ev, controlled by the Nome King, who has captured the royal family and turned them into ornaments displayed throughout his palace. Tik-Tok escorts them to the home of Princess Langwidere. Ozma appears on a magic carpet, courtesy of Glinda, with her chums the Tin Woodsman, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion, and they set off to the underground kingdom of the Nomes. They undergo a challenge from the Nome King and are on the brink of disaster when Billina saves the day, rescuing her companions and the royal family. They return to a victory celebration in the Emerald City.

She and Billina befriend Tik-Tok, a clockwork man in need of winding, and narrowly escape the Wheelers, wild animals with wheels for legs.
