Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Aug. 15, 2016)
Classics for Your Collection: goo.gl/U80LCr --------- The Adventures of Gerard is a compilation of short stories that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote regarding a French Brigadier named Etienne Gerard who thinks very highly of himself as can be reflected in how he told his stories. The book is divided into chapters containing different segments of his life as a soldier under the leadership of Napoleon together with his personal exploits and the romance that swept his way in between. Typical of war stories, some depicts bloody encounters with his enemies and how he was able to escape those encounters. However, there were soft moments particularly his encounter with women along the way even if she is from their enemy. This book is one of Conan Doyle's best works and one of the most entertaining works of fiction. Etienne Gerard is an utterly wonderful character. The exploits and adventures in which he performs are never less than magnificent, ingenious and frequently brutal. The prose style is elegant, crisp and highly humorous. Clearly Gerard frequently exaggerates his achievements, but there is also real chivalrous behaviour, courage and resourcefulness in his nature; and although the tone of the stories is frequently extremely satiric, they are also stirring adventure yarns at the same time. An exceptional volume, a delight! He is dashing, flamboyant, and unbelievably full of himself. In every life-and-death scenario, his actions are determined by how much glory his death in the present circumstances would bring, and hardly a daring episode goes by in which his heart is not swelled with the thought of his own nobility, courage, or glory. These short stories are historically interesting, the action is cleverly done and exciting, and the hero and his comic comportment are very entertaining. Scroll Up and Grab Your Copy! I have seen a great many cities, my friends. I would not dare to tell you how many I have entered as a conqueror with eight hundred of my little fighting devils clanking and jingling behind me. The cavalry were in front of the Grande Armee, and the Hussars of Conflans were in front of the cavalry, and I was in front of the Hussars. But of all the cities which we visited Venice is the most ill–built and ridiculous. I cannot imagine how the people who laid it out thought that the cavalry could manoeuvre. It would puzzle Murat or Lassalle to bring a squadron into that square of theirs. For this reason we left Kellermann's heavy brigade and also my own Hussars at Padua on the mainland. But Suchet with the infantry held the town, and he had chosen me as his aide–de–camp for that winter, because he was pleased about the affair of the Italian fencing–master at Milan. The fellow was a good swordsman, and it was fortunate for the credit of French arms that it was I who was opposed to him.

Brigadier Gerard is the hero of a series of historical short stories by the British writer Arthur Conan Doyle. The hero, Etienne Gerard, is a Hussar officer in the French Army during the Napoleonic Wars. Gerard's most notable attribute is his vanity – he is utterly convinced that he is the bravest soldier, greatest swordsman, most accomplished horseman and most gallant lover in all France. Gerard is not entirely wrong, since he displays notable bravery on many occasions, but his self-satisfaction undercuts this quite often. Obsessed with honour and glory, he is always ready with a stirring speech or a gallant remark to a lady. Conan Doyle, in making his hero a vain, and often rather uncomprehending, Frenchman, was able to satirise both the stereotypical English view of the French and – by presenting them from Gerard's baffled point of view – English manners and attitudes.
