  • The Secret Life Of Bees - Novel

    Sue Monk Kidd

Paperback (Penguin Books, Jan. 1, 2002)
Amazon.com Review: In Sue Monk Kidd's The Secret Life of Bees, 14-year-old Lily Owen, neglected by her father and isolated on their South Carolina peach farm, spends hours imagining a blissful infancy when she was loved and nurtured by her mother, Deborah, whom she barely remembers. These consoling fantasies are her heart's answer to the family story that as a child, in unclear circumstances, Lily accidentally shot and killed her mother. All Lily has left of Deborah is a strange image of a Black Madonna, with the words "Tiburon, South Carolina" scrawled on the back. The search for a mother, and the need to mother oneself, are crucial elements in this well-written coming-of-age story set in the early 1960s against a background of racial violence and unrest. When Lily's beloved nanny, Rosaleen, manages to insult a group of angry white men on her way to register to vote and has to skip town, Lily takes the opportunity to go with her, fleeing to the only place she can think of--Tiburon, South Carolina--determined to find out more about her dead mother. Although the plot threads are too neatly trimmed, The Secret Life of Bees is a carefully crafted novel with an inspired depiction of character. The legend of the Black Madonna and the brave, kind, peculiar women who perpetuate Lily's story dominate the second half of the book, placing Kidd's debut novel squarely in the honored tradition of the Southern Gothic. --Regina Marler [This text refers to the Hardcover edition].
  • The Life of the Bee

    Maurice Maeterlinck, Alfred Sutro

    eBook (, May 22, 2020)
In an exuberantly poetic work that is less about bees and more about life, Maurice Maeterlinck expresses his philosophy of the human condition. The renowned Belgian poet and dramatist offers brilliant proof in this, his most popular work, that "no living creature, not even man, has achieved in the center of his sphere, what the bee has achieved." From their amazingly intricate feats of architecture to their intrinsic sense of self-sacrifice, Maeterlinck takes a "bee's-eye view" of the most orderly society on Earth. An enthusiastic and expert beekeeper, Maeterlinck did not intend to write a scientific treatise, even though he details such topics as the mathematically accurate construction of the hive, the division of labor among community members, the life of the young queen and her miraculous nuptial flight, and the movement and meaning of the swarm. An enchanting classic by one of the most important figures of world literature in the twentieth century and winner of the 1911 Nobel Prize in Literature, this fascinating study is a magnificent tribute to one of the most orderly communities in the world. It is also filled with humble lessons for the human race.

  • The Secret of the Ninth Life

    Leslie Schuster

    language (, Aug. 15, 2013)
Do you believe in magic? Do you believe a bond between a pet and an owner can be magical? You may, if you read this story; Mr. and Mrs. Woodward spent their working years renovating and rebuilding an old homestead in the mountain community of Cedar Valley while they raised their kids and worked toward retirement. Finally the day came when they were able to move to the homestead they named Harmony Hollow.Mr. Woodward became the depot master for the small local railroad and Mrs. Woodward took care of the many lost or abandoned cats that came to live in their animal sanctuary. Being lifetime animal lovers, this had always been their dream and the only worry hanging over their relatively tranquil lives was Mrs. Woodward's slowly deteriorating health. They had three dogs and a whole brother hood of cats lead by "Danny", a large orange and white Persian cat and his best friend, "Oscar", a solid black Persian. Together they all shared adventures with their brother and sister cats in and around the town, leading up to the most amazing journey any cat or dog ever took. When Mrs. Woodward becomes fatally ill, the oldest cat of the family, Bonnie, an old Irish cat, advised Danny and Oscar that, even though she was very sick, there was a way for the family of cats and dogs to work together to save their mistress's life. All the animals adored their human "mom" so they were anxious to help her get well. Bonnie explained that they would have to go on a quest, away from the safety of their homestead, incorporating the help of a specially selected team of their feline and canine friends, to interpret the signs, follow the signs and ultimately they must find the magic to save Mrs. Woodward. Told through the eyes of the animals, the quest is sometimes troubling, sometimes exciting, and sometimes just plain confusing but together they forge on to find the answers they need, the answers to be found only in the Secret of the Ninth Life.
