Paperback (Barrons Juveniles, Aug. 1, 2000)
Preschoolers love guessing games--and that's what they get in Finger Quiz books. Eddie, a comical duck, uses a cartoon-style illustration on every page to pose a question. At the bottom of the page are three possible answers in the form of three smaller pictures, each with a round finger hole die-cut through the page. Only one hole points to the right answer. Kids make their guess by putting their finger into just one of the holes, then flipping the page to find the answer. They'll see Eddie Duck pointing at one hole. If it's the hole that matches their finger, they've answered the question correctly! 30 finger quizzes on heavyweight paper in each book. Kids study a picture, then check questions to find details that match it. For instance, what's the opposite of a hot, bright sun? A bowl of hot soup? A bitter lemon? Or a very cold ice cream cone? Kids will find lots more opposites in this Finger Quiz. (Ages 4-6)

  • Opposites

    Dick Fitch

    Paperback (AuthorHouse, July 1, 2014)
Have fun reading to your children this book of words that are opposite of one another. Once you have read it to them several times, pause at the end of the sentences with the opposite meaning and let them say it. Then reverse the sentence by reading what they just answered and end the new sentence with the other opposite word. Confused? It's a bit hard to explain but here is a simple example: "She went fast, and he went slow." Once they learn "slow" read the sentence in reverse: "He went slow, and she went (pause for their answer) fast." That way they get to say each word while they are learning. Give them a big shout-out for each correct answer. If your child is particularly bright (and I'm sure he or she is), have them make up new sentences and expand the story. You may want to write those new sentences down for posterity.

    Colin Petty

    Hardcover (B.E.S. Publishing, April 1, 2006)
Kids slide panels into view and learn basic concepts! This "Concept Sliders" book is filled with big, bright, color illustrations that teach toddlers how to contrast big and small, wet and dry, slow and fast, and in and out, with amusing animals to help them. An illustration on every page contains a pair of windows, one window presenting a small slide device that goes back and forth, and the other window located as part of an incomplete but easy-to-understand statement or a question. When kids move the slide device, they also move a word into the statement window. That word either completes the statement or answers the question for them. Here is an entertaining way for preschoolers to teach themselves fundamental concepts. Color illustrations on every page.
