  • On Liberty

    John Stuart Mill, Gildart Jackson

Audio CD (Tantor Audio, March 25, 2011)
First published in 1859, John Stuart Mill's On Liberty is an exhaustive exploration of social and civic liberty, its limits, and its consequences. Mill's work is a classic of political liberalism that contains a rational justification of the freedom of the individual in opposition to the claims of the state. Drawing upon the empiricism of John Locke, George Berkeley, and David Hume and the utilitarianism of Jeremy Bentham, On Liberty defends the representative democracy as the culmination of society's progression from lower to higher stages, even as it recognizes one of the unique dangers of this type of government-namely, the "tyranny of the majority."Central to Mill's ideology is the harm principle-the idea that individual liberties should only be curtailed when they harm or interfere with the ability of others to exercise their own liberties. Unlike other liberal theorists, Mill did not rely upon theories of abstract rights to support his ideology, but rather grounded his philosophy in ideas of utility. As relevant to modern audiences as it was to Mill's Victorian readership, On Liberty is an enduring classic of political thought.

    Hardcover (Unknown, March 15, 2007)
Synopsis Published in 1859, John Stuart Mill's On Liberty presented one of the most eloquent defenses of individual freedom in nineteenth-century social and political philosophy and is today perhaps the most widely-read liberal argument in support of the value of liberty. Mill's passionate advocacy of spontaneity, individuality, and diversity, along with his contempt for compulsory uniformity and the despotism of popular opinion, has attracted both admiration and condemnation. About the Author: John Stuart Mill was born in a suburb of London on May 20, 1806. By the age of ten he was reading classical authors in the original Greek and Latin, was proficient in history, algebra, and geometry, and soon after began to study logic, political economy, and law. He was elected to Parliament in 1865 and held the Radical seat for Westminster for the next three years. Mill died in Avignon, France, on May 7, 1873.

    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, Sept. 3, 2016)
John Stuart Mill was not only a political visionary who lived and wrote well before hist time, but also a man who, in the interest of preserving and supporting liberty, wrote one of the most outstanding and well-designed philosophical and political work of literature in the 19th century: On Liberty. While the document is quite lengthy, it also leaves nothing to chance. On Liberty is one of Mill's most important literary writings, focusing on the limits of individual liberty, as well as the constraints and limitations associated with the liberties that governments should (or should not) be allowed. Is individual freedom important? How should it be handled overall? And how far should the government be allowed to go when preventing individual liberty “for the good of all”? These are just some of the deep and meaningful questions that Mill so tactfully and elaborately tackles in On Liberty. While this text was quite important in context with the world's political arena as it was during the middle of the 19th century – when it was written – it is even more crucial a read today. How important is your freedom? Also, how much of an effort are governments making today in order to uphold and protect the freedom of their citizens? In our increasingly complex world, where technology has also come to play a role more crucial than Mill could have possibly foreseen, his enlightening ideas about the relationship between authority and liberty are a guiding light that has inspired many leaders and political idealists to this day.Mill's political views and ideology is not easy to understand, and it might actually be difficult to digest for modern day readers. However, with the author's well-written introduction and an easy to understand series of definitions and premises that Mill so skillfully outlines and exemplifies, you may find this ingenious work of literature to be enlightening, as well as powerful, and quite timeless.

  • On Liberty

    John Stuart Mill

Paperback (Cosimo Classics, Nov. 22, 2005)
No one can be a great thinker who does not recognise, that as a thinker it is his first duty to follow his intellect to whatever conclusions it may lead. Truth gains more even by the errors of one who, with due study and preparation, thinks for himself, than by the true opinions of those who only hold them because they do not suffer themselves to think. -John Stuart Mill, in On Liberty Often mentioned in the same breath with the Communist Manifesto, On Liberty-perhaps the greatest work from British political philosopher John Stuart Mill-is one of the most profound and most hotly debated works of the 19th century. Is it a classic plea for human freedom and intellectual development... or is it factually wrong and morally offensive?
  • On Liberty

    John Stuart Mill

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Dec. 6, 2016)
THE liberty of the individual and of minority groups to act and think without undue restraint takes precedence in this work. John Stuart Mill’s concern is with modern European governments in which “the will of the people” constitutes the authority setting limits on liberty. The very progress of a nation is threatened when ideas and opinions are punished or restrained. Suppressed beliefs and actions, he points out, are condemned in one era and lauded in the next. Mill, however, recognizes instances when actions should be banned or at least discouraged. The challenge is to establish the proper balance between liberty and restraint. from Chapter I The object of this Essay is to assert one very simple principle, as entitled to govern absolutely the dealings of society with the individual in the way of compulsion and control, whether the means used be physical force in the form of legal penalties, or the moral coercion of public opinion. That principle is, that the sole end for which mankind are warranted, individually or collectively, in interfering with the liberty of action of any of their number, is self-protection. That the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilised community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others.
