Books with title Five Little Peppers and their Friends

  • Five Little Peppers and How They Grew.

Margaret. Sidney, Illustrated by George Giguere.

Hardcover (Houghton Mifflin Company, Jan. 1, 1936)
Review By drebbles "The Five Little Peppers" are Ben, Polly, Joel, Davie, and Phronsie. Their father died when Phronsie was a baby and Mrs. Pepper struggles to earn enough money to support the family. Despite their poverty, they are a loving family, full of spirit and adventure. Ben and Polly do what they can to support the family, but a bout with measles threatens the well being of the entire Pepper clan, especially Joel and Polly. The family has other adventures and befriend Jasper King during one of them. This friendship will enrich their lives in ways they never thought would be possible. It's always interesting as an adult to reread a book that I loved as a child. When I was young I thought how much fun the Peppers had and longed to belong to a large family. As an adult, I realize how poor the family really was and how quickly the children had to grow up. As a child I thought how terrible it was that Polly couldn't read for days on end because of the measles; as an adult I realize the Peppers couldn't even afford to buy books. First published in 1881, "The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew" is old-fashioned (the doctor even makes house calls!), but still enjoyable. The Peppers are all delightful children, with Joel being the most honest of the bunch as he complains about having to eat the same food every day. Margaret Sidney was a talented author, who could make even inanimate objects, such as the stove, seem alive. The children's adventures may seem simple to today's young readers, who are used to Harry Potter and the like, but it's a refreshing change.

"Full of incident, full of fun, and none the less full of sound, practical, moral and religious teaching." -Congregationalist "Margaret Sidney stands side by side with Louisa Alcott, in fresh, unstilted style, in refined sensibility, and in pure and wholesome depiction of home life among children." -Journal of Education "This is a story of five little American children, who are left with their widowed mother in very straitened circumstances. In describing the sunshine of their home life, the writer teaches a lesson in a pleasant way to the small inmates of wealthier homes. Polly and Phronsie are charming characters, and show that the author both knows and loves children." -The Academy and Literature "She writes from an experience in which wisdom and sympathy have been felicitously blended." -Saturday Evening Gazette "It is seldom one finds so much simplicity and naturalness combined with so much interest in a child's story." -Chicago Times "We may remark as evidence of the extraordinary popularity of this series that nearly half a million copies of this particular volume have been sold, while its successors, nearly a dozen in number, have had almost equal popularity." -New Outlook "Children cannot fail to be interested in books which relate - story fashion - events that might just as well have really happened, and the Five Little Peppers have lots of fun and plenty of events in their lives, and are real, human children after all." -The American Bookseller "One of the most successful juvenile books of the past five years." -The American: A National Journal "A book which has been popular with young people for years." -The Bookman CONTENTS: A Home View Making Happiness for Mamsie Mamsie's Birthday Trouble for the Little Brown House More Trouble Hard Days for Polly The Cloud Over the Little Brown House Joel's Turn Sunshine Again A Threatened Blow Safe New Friends Phronsie Pays a Debt of Gratitude A Letter to Jasper Jolly Days Getting a Christmas for the Little Ones Christmas Bells!
