What followed after her little experiment is one of the finest examples of what makes Christmas stories truly inspiring.The Christmas Angel by Abbie Farwell Brown is considered one of Brown's best works, as well as one of the most beautiful, easy to read and ageless stories about Christmas that anyone, from children to older folks, could easily enjoy.Patterned after Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, the story has many similarities when it comes to depicting the unique and sometimes disconcerting views that people can have about Christmas. In The Christmas Angel, Ms. Terry has the role of an older woman who doesn't feel like Christmas is anything special anymore. In her view, the holiday had become a shadow of what it once was, with her contemporary early 20th century peers buying things they don't need and “wasting perfectly good candles” lighting them outside their homes in an early version of the Christmas lights tradition.In an attempt to prove that people only cared about themselves and that Christmas values weren't “real”, Ms. Terry took an old box of toys, and placed the toys outside to see if people would just take them selfishly – which apparently did happen. The intervention of the Christmas Angel, however, who showed Ms. Terry the true intentions and actions of those people, has led her to start believing in the beauty of Christmas once more.

She stooped once more to pick up something which had fallen out when the cover was jarred open. It was a pink papier-mâché angel, such as are often hung from the top of Christmas trees as a crowning symbol. Norah stood holding it between thumb and finger, staring amazedly.
