La Débâcle is a novel by Émile Zola published in 1892, the penultimate in les Rougon-Macquart series. This is the hardcover only stated COLLIER EDITION from 1902 (gasp!). It is a volume in a set of FRENCH CLASSICAL ROMANCES. The handsome Collier set of hardcover French Classical Romances in English translations was particularly popular when it was first published at the turn of the last century in 1902 by P.F. Collier & Son, New York. The books are bound in a pastel green cloth with "The French Classical Romances" in black within a black banner on the front panel. On the spine are titles in black against a gilt border outlined in black. Above the title is a gilt crown, and below are four black fleur de lis. Each volume has a frontis illustration, a portrait of the author, with tissue guard, plus a facsimile author's signature beneath his or her portrait. Each volume has an Introduction to the novel, written by literary critics of the period. In the rear, following each novel, are period illustrations, portraits and caricatures of the author as well as essays on each presentation. Both the cover (no dj) and the book are in excellent condition. There are no rips, tears, markings, etc.---and the pages and binding are tight (see photo). **Note: All books listed as FIRST EDITIONS are stated by the publisher in words or number lines--or--only stated editions that include only the publisher and publication date.
