  • How the Mighty Fall: And Why Some Companies Never Give In

    Jim Collins

Audio CD (Audiobooks, July 2, 2009)
Decline can be avoided.Decline can be detected.Decline can be reversed.Amidst the desolate landscape of fallen great companies, Jim Collins began to wonder: How do the mighty fall? Can decline be detected early and avoided? How far can a company fall before the path toward doom becomes inevitable and unshakable? How can companies reverse course? In How the Mighty Fall, Collins confronts these questions, offering leaders the well-founded hope that they can learn how to stave off decline and, if they find themselves falling, reverse their course. Collins' research project-more than four years in duration-uncovered five step-wise stages of decline: Stage 1: Hubris Born of SuccessStage 2: Undisciplined Pursuit of MoreStage 3: Denial of Risk and PerilStage 4: Grasping for SalvationStage 5: Capitulation to Irrelevance or DeathBy understanding these stages of decline, leaders can substantially reduce their chances of falling all the way to the bottom.Great companies can stumble, badly, and recover.Every institution, no matter how great, is vulnerable to decline. There is no law of nature that the most powerful will inevitably remain at the top. Anyone can fall and most eventually do. But, as Collins' research emphasizes, some companies do indeed recover-in some cases, coming back even stronger-even after having crashed into the depths of Stage 4.Decline, it turns out, is largely self-inflicted, and the path to recovery lies largely within our own hands. We are not imprisoned by our circumstances, our history, or even our staggering defeats along the way. As long as we never get entirely knocked out of the game, hope always remains. The mighty can fall, but they can often rise again.

  • To the Lighthouse

    Virginia Woolf, Vanessa Redgrave

Audio CD (BBC Audiobooks, Oct. 1, 2007)
Dramatized here by Vanessa Redgrave and a full cast, To the Lighthouse is a great literary achievement, and Virginia Woolfs most popular novel. This semi-autobiographical novel is based on her recollections of family holidays in Cornwall. From the seemingly trivial postponement of a visit to a nearby lighthouse, Virginia Woolf constructs a moving examination of the complex tensions and allegiances of family life. The novel is split into three sections. In the first, the gracious and imaginative Mrs. Ramsay and her self-centered and absurd husband are preparing for a dinner party, where the guests include a philosopher, a young couple, and painter Lily Briscoe (based on Virginia Woolfs sister Vanessa). In the second section the story moves on to after the war and we discover that Mrs. Ramsay, her son and one of the guests have died. In the last section Lily Briscoe finally achieves what she has been trying to do with her painting and Mr. Ramsay and the children reach the lighthouse -- a trip planned in the first section that only now reaches fruition.
  • Mr Gum and the Biscuit Billionaire

    Andy Stanton

Audio CD (BBC Audiobooks, March 15, 2010)
'An irresistible, laughter-inducing romp' - "Sunday Times Good evening." Ok, this book's a bit hard to describe. There's this gingerbread man with electric muscles, see? And he's as rich as a mushroom, right? And Mr Gum and Billy William are planning to get the cash, yeah? And it's up to Polly to save the day. And there's a funfair and hot dogs, and Friday O'Leary shouts out some crazy stuff, and...hey, that wasn't so hard to describe after all. Mr Gum is back and as nasty as ever in this second hilarious story, read by the author and with music and sound effects.
  • The Journey of Billy Boom Train

    Brian Batts, Charles Long

Audio CD (Audiobook Artists, Jan. 1, 2009)
The 4-time award-winning audiobook (Benjamin Franklin Award Finalist, Gold Parent's Choice Award & Gold Mom's Choice Award, Young Voices Foundation Gold), The Journey of Billy Boom Train is the first childrens audiobook of its kind. The story is strung together by sound effects that become part of rhythmic music, ultimately providing Billy and the listener a path of sound to follow. Basic Plot (no spoilers): Billy Boom Train is a traveling hobo with a gift of hearing music wherever he goes. He decides to follow this path of sound and music in the hopes that he will find his long lost family.
