    David Herbert Lawrence, Paula Benitez

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Dec. 15, 2016)
The tale relates the story of two sisters, daughters of an Anglican vicar, who return from overseas to a drab, lifeless vicarage in the post-First World War East Midlands. Their mother has run off, a scandal that is not talked about by the family. Their new home is dominated by a blind and selfish grandmother along with her mean-spirited, poisonous daughter. The two girls, Yvette and Lucille, risk being suffocated by the life they now lead at the Vicarage. They try their utmost every day to bring colour and fun into their lives. Out on a trip with some friends one Sunday afternoon, Yvette encounters a Gypsy and his family and this meeting reinforces her disenchantment with the oppressive domesticity of the vicarage. It also awakens in her a sexual curiosity she has not felt before, despite having admirers...

  • The Virgin and the Gipsy: Original Text

    D. H. Lawrence

Paperback (Independently published, April 13, 2020)
Discovered in France after Lawrence’s death, it was immediately recognized as a masterpiece in which he’d distilled and purified his ideas about sexuality and morality, being considered one of Lawrence’s most electrifying short novels. Set in a small village in the English countryside, this is the story of a secluded, sensitive rector’s daughter who yearns for meaning beyond the life to which she seems doomed. When she meets a handsome young gipsy whose life appears different from hers in every way, she is immediately smitten and yet still paralyzed by her own fear and social convention. Not until a natural catastrophe suddenly, miraculously sweeps away the world as she knew it does a new world of passion open for her. Lawrence’s spirit is infused by all his tenderness, passion, and knowledge of the human soul. The ill wind that blows nobody any good swept away the vicarage family on its blast. Then lo and behold! the vicar, who was somewhat distinguished as an essayist and a controversialist, and whose case had aroused sympathy among the bookish men, received the living of Papplewick. The Lord had tempered the wind of misfortune with a rectorate in the north country. The rectory was a rather ugly stone house down by the river Papple, before you come into the village. Further on, beyond where the road crosses the stream, were the big old stone cotton-mills, once driven by water. The road curved uphill, into the bleak stone streets of the village. The vicarage family received decided modification, upon its transference into the rectory. The vicar, now the rector, fetched up his old mother and his sister, and a brother from the city. The two little girls had a very different milieu from the old home

  • The Virgin and the Gipsy Annotated

    David Herbert Lawrence

Paperback (Independently published, April 22, 2020)
The novel tells us about the false morality of the Lawrence’s times (the author does not mention any dates, but gives several indirect hints that he is speaking about his contemporaries) and how difficultly it is accepted by young and inquisitive individuals. The daughters of Anglican vicar, Yvette and Lucille, were abandoned by their mother, whose name became a family taboo, as she disdained morality and left her husband and children for the young man. This is partially autobiographical to Lawrence’s wife, who also abandoned her children for the writer himself. Lawrence described the routine everyday life in the vicar’s home, where reined old selfish woman, mother of vicar. His unmarried sister and brother were also dwelling with him. From the very beginning we learn that both girls were sent to France for a good education, where they were taught freedom of thinking and understanding. At home they met everything as it was left before. Aunt Cissie, devoted her life serving to the old lady (all call her “The Mater” and she associated with everything in the house), being very religious, she associated the girls with the “evil” traits of their mother, hating Yvette, even their names were irritating for her as reminds of their mother’s sin. The main plot took place in after war times and many dwellers of the countryside had personal automobiles.

Paperback (Independently published, June 13, 2020)
When the vicar's wife went off with a young and penniless man the scandal knew no bounds. Her two little girls were only seven and nine years old respectively. And the vicar was such a good husband. True, his hair was grey. But his moustache was dark, he was handsome, and still full of furtive passion for his unrestrained and beautiful wife. Why did she go? Why did she burst away with such an Ă©clat of revulsion, like a touch of madness?Nobody gave any answer. Only the pious said she was a bad woman. While some of the good women kept silent. They knew. The two little girls never knew. Wounded, they decided that it was because their mother found them negligible. The ill wind that blows nobody any good swept away the vicarage family on its blast. Then lo and behold! the vicar, who was somewhat distinguished as an essayist and a controversialist, and whose case had aroused sympathy among the bookish men, received the living of Papplewick. David Herbert Lawrence

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Aug. 9, 2017)
The Virgin and the Gipsy is a short novel (or novella) by English author D.H. Lawrence. It was written in 1926 and published posthumously in 1930. Today it is often entitled The Virgin and the Gypsy which can lead to confusion because first and early editions had the spelling "Gipsy". The tale relates the story of two sisters, daughters of an Anglican vicar, who return from finishing school overseas to a drab, lifeless rectory in the East Midlands, not long after the World War I. Their mother has run off with another man, a scandal that is not talked about by the family, especially the girls' father, who was deeply humiliated and only remembers his wife as she was when they first met many years before.
