    Edith Wharton

    eBook (, Dec. 21, 2018)
Summer is a novel by Edith Wharton, which was published in 1917 by Charles Scribner's Sons. While most novels by Edith Wharton dealt with New York's upper-class society, this is one of two novels by Wharton that were set in New England. Its themes include social class, the role of women in society, destructive relationships, sexual awakening and the desire of its protagonist, named Charity Royall. The novel was rather controversial for its time and is one of the less famous among her novels because of its subject matter.

    Edith Wharton

    eBook (Digireads.com Publishing, March 20, 2020)
First published in 1917, “Summer” is one of only two novels by Edith Wharton not set in the upper-class society of New York. It is instead set in New England and was very controversial at the time it was published as it is the story of the sexual awakening of a young woman, named Charity Royall. Charity, the daughter of mountain moonshiners, was abandoned by her poor parents and adopted by her small town’s most learned person, Lawyer Royall. Charity is unsatisfied and restless and spends her days yearning for a more exciting and luxurious life outside of North Dormer. She falls for Lucius Harney, an educated young architect visiting North Dormer from the city. Charity and Lucius begin an affair, much to the disapproval of Mr. Royall and Charity’s relationship with her guardian becomes darker and more complicated. “Summer” is a thought-provoking and ambiguous story of a young girl coming to terms with her feelings and sexuality, as well as a commentary on the impossible standards that are often applied to women’s behavior. The war between freedom and repression in the environment of overwhelming social pressure of early 20th century America continues to resonant today. This edition includes a biographical afterword.

    Edith Wharton, Candace Waid

Mass Market Paperback (Signet, Jan. 1, 1993)
In 1917, when Edith Wharton published Summer, she was living in a France “steeped in the tragic realities of war.” Yet she set this book far away from Paris and explored her most daring theme—a woman’s awakening to her sexual needs. Eighteen-year-old Charity Royall, is bored in the small Massachusetts town of North Dormer and ignorant of desire until she meets a visiting architect, Lucius Harney. Like the lush summer of Berkshires around them, their romance is shimmering and idyllic, but its consequences are harsh and real. And the book, for its early twentieth-century audience, was shocking. Wharton’s pellucid prose, her raw depiction of the mountain community where Charity was born, and Charity’s rites of passage into adulthood elevate Summer into a groundbreaking study of society, nature, and human needs. Joseph Conrad prized this gem of a novel and Wharton also favored it. Now the modern reader can experience the most erotic fiction Edith Wharton ever wrote. This anniversary edition also contains an introduction by notable Wharton scholar Candace Waid.
  • Before Summer's End

    Irene Olds, Marlene Lauster Young

    eBook (AuthorHouse, Oct. 9, 2012)
We may reminisce about a first baby doll at Christmas or a Radio Flyer wagon long awaited. Recalling precious moments of youth, and the love held within them, is food for our souls. Such precious moments often escape us.Before Summers End recalls a time and place in history that has escaped many of us. It was a time when being young meant carefree summers, running in the rain, and discovering the unknown. Within this story lie the innocence of youth, the true importance of family, and the way that little things in life hold true meaning.Excitement fills the air while we wander through a summer day near the end of harvest time. We romp in the yard, chasing away the ducks as we search for gold. We watch a stray cat being squirted with milk and roll over in laughter until our bellies hurt. In the front yard, a rope swing patiently waits to take our breath away as it glides through the breeze. We remember the time when being young was easy and carefree. Before Summers End reminds us of days past, when the pace of life was slower and one could savor its joy, feel its purity, and hold tightly to its truth. It was a time when children stood on a strong foundation that was built out of everyday, ordinary moments.
