  • The Rescue

    Agnes Musa

    language (, Oct. 24, 2014)
This children’s picture story book is suitable as a read alone book for anyone learning to read, learning English, learning English as a second language and as a bed time reader for parents introducing children to reading. While the book entertains, more emphasis is put towards the educational aspect. This is the reason why this book, one in a series of seven books, makes extensive use of sight “flash” words from the Dolchlist, covering pre primer to third grade level.Familiar names are used for all the animal characters in the book to enable children to identify with the characters and kindle their imagination. Pages in the book are done separately to address the issue of word and image distortion on some e-readers. The book is written in large words to make it easy to read. In this book, all the animals are now at the deep hole. They want to rescue Abigail and Matthew Squirrel. Olivia Elephant says ropes are for humans. Elijah Bat says he has the best night vision. Alexander Lion thinks they must first know what they are up against. Will the animals manage to rescue the Squirrels?

  • Rescue Pup

    Brenda Fiorini

Paperback (Joyful Journey Books, Aug. 25, 2010)
Telling Buddy's story in Rescue Pup creates in readers, young and old, an awareness of our system of rescuing animals that can't fend for themselves. Buddy is abandoned in an empty house and breaks free, only to be faced with many dangers on his own. He eventually finds himself in an overcrowded shelter where he fears he will never be noticed and adopted. It is worth reading time and again to our children. This story builds character as it deals with concepts like responsibility, friendship, and love. Young readers benefit from early exposure to these virtues. In Rescue Pup, these concepts are presented naturally in the course of the story so children can easily grasp them. Perhaps what gives the story its greatest impact is that it is largely based on a true story. What makes it important is that what happened to Buddy happens all too often in our modern world. That's why this simple book is also a very important one. As we teach our children how to responsibly care for the animals put into our charge, we begin to create a future in which pets do not need to go through what Buddy did.
