âWoodland Tales, 21 Bedtime Stories for Childrenâ by Karen Karras and George Karras, is a collection of 21 illustrated children's stories. There is a short poem at the end of each of the 21 stories, that helps the child to understand the story on a different level. These charming stories portray woodland animals in many diverse situations. The animals must learn how to cope with life and with each other, in ways that are sometimes humorous, yet trying and difficult. They soon learn through trial and error to treat each other with respect and understanding. In one story a sleepy bear lies down under a walnut tree, to take a nap. He looks over at a nearby field of juicy watermelons, and wants one to eat, but is too tired to bother going all the way over to get one. He decides it is strange that watermelons do not grow on trees. The bear soon falls asleep only to be rudely awakened by a walnut hitting him on the nose. He quickly realizes that nature is just what it was intended to be, for a very good reason. In another story two pig brothers break open their people banks, take the money out and run to the candy store to spend it all on candy. What happens afterwards teaches them both quite a different lesson. These charming stories can be read to children at any time, but make perfect bedtime stories. The stories are done in a larger type size so they may also be read by grandparents or by children themselves, in helping them to learn how to read. Your child will find these stories delightful and funny, as well as thought provoking, on many different levels. All of the stories in this book were written and illustrated over a period of years by Karen Karras and George Karras. Each story is beautifully illustrated in watercolor by Karen Karras.
