eBook (Paris Press Inc., Oct. 12, 2014)
The great beauty of Andrew Lang’s Blue Fairy Book, originally published in 1889, is that it brought together many different fairy tale traditions. There are stories written by Charles Perrault and Mme d’Aulnoy, collected by the Grimm brothers and Asbjornsen and Moe, and translated from the Arabian Nights. It is a very rich collection of fairy tales. However, the stories are written in a language that is outdated and in places inaccessible to modern American children (and even their parents). To remedy this problem, I have thoroughly edited half of the stories contained in Lang`s book, keeping the stories as intact as possible, while revising every sentence so the stories can once again be read with pleasure by children. The stories include Toads and Diamonds, Beauty and the Beast, Snow-white and Rose-red, Why the Sea is Salty, Felicia and the Pot of Carnations, Hansel and Grettel, Little Red Riding Hood, The Master Maid, The Goose-girl, Prince Hyacinth and the Adorable Princess, The Girl with Saffron Hair, The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood, Rumpelstiltzkin, The Tale of a Youth who Set out to Learn what Fear was, Cinderella, Puss in Boots, The White Cat and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.

  • The Blue Fairy Book

    Various, Andrew Lang

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, March 11, 2015)
The Fairy Books, or "Colored" Fairy Books is a collection of fairy tales divided into twelve books, each associated with a different color. Collected together by Andrew Land they are sourced from a number of different countries and were translated by Lang's wife and other translators who also retold many of the tales. The collection has been incalculably important and, although he did not source the stories himself direct from the oral tradition he can make claim to the first English translation of many. First published in 1889, The Blue Fairy Book is the 1st volume in this series and contains some of the best known tales, taken from a variety of sources: not only from Grimm, but exciting adventures by Charles Perrault and Madame d'Aulnoy, The Arabian Nights, and other stories from popular traditions. Here in one attractive paperbound volume—with enlarged print—are "Sleeping Beauty," "Rumpelstiltskin," "Beauty and the Beast," "Hansel and Gretel," "Puss in Boots," "Trusty John," "Jack the Giantkiller," "Goldilocks," and many other favorites that have become an indispensable part of our cultural heritage. In total this collection contains 37 stories, all narrated in the clear, lively prose for which Lang was famous. Not only are Lang's generally acknowledged to be the best English versions of standard stories, his collections are the richest and widest in range. His position as one of England's foremost folklorists as well as his first-rate literary abilities makes his collections unmatchable in the English language. • The Blue Fairy Book

    Andrew Lang

    Paperback (Independently published, )
Andrew Lang's Fairy Books or Andrew Lang's "Coloured" Fairy Books constitute a twelve-book series of fairy tale collections. Although Andrew Lang did not collect the stories himself from the oral tradition, the extent of his sources, who had collected them originally (with the notable exception of Madame d'Aulnoy), made them an immensely influential collection, especially as he used foreign-language sources, giving many of these tales their first appearance in English. As acknowledged in the prefaces, although Lang himself made most of the selections, his wife and other translators did a large portion of the translating and telling of the actual stories. The Blue Fairy Book assembled a wide range of tales, with seven from the Brothers Grimm, five from Madame d'Aulnoy, three from the Arabian Nights, and four Norse stories, among other sources.

  • The Blue Fairy Book,

    Andrew Lang, Frederick Richardson

Hardcover (John C. Winston Co, Jan. 1, 1930)
Andrew Lang compiled a total of 25 anthologies of local folk tales of magic and adventure, commonly referred to as fairy books. Eleven of these books do not contain the term "Fairy Book", however. Of the fourteen "coloured" Fairy Books (each title as this one "The [Color] Fairy Book"), 12 were illustrated with etchings and color lithographs by HJ Ford. This book sees the intricate Victorian sensibilities of the Ford's work replaced with an art nouveau approach by Frederick Richardson.
