  • Frank Lloyd Wright: Master Builder

    Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer, David Larkin

    Paperback (Universe, Oct. 15, 1997)
This book presents twenty-five of the most renowned and significant buildings of America's premier architect, from his early Prairie work in Oak Park, Illinois, in the 1890s to his daring creations of the 1940s and 1950s. Published in association with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, this superbly illustrated volume features previously unpublished photographs for which renowned architectural photographers Michael Freeman and Paul Rocheleau gained unprecedented access to some of Wright's masterworks. The book examines in unsurpassed detail a selection of Wright's architecture that covers the phenomenal range of his work, including such internationally famous buildings as the Home and Studio in Oak Park, Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona, Fallingwater in Mill Run, Pennsylvania, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, as well as several lesser-known residences such as the Auldbrass Plantation in South Carolina and the Kenneth Laurent house in Rockford, Illinois. The works featured here are succinctly documented by one of Wright's former apprentices, with text that details the development and execution of each commission. Also included throughout is a selection of Wright's extensive writings, unpublished talks, and private letters.

  • Funny Animals

    Aleksey Igudesman

    Sheet music (Universal Edition, )
Aleksey Igudesman has always enjoyed writing pieces inspired by animals. His latest collections "In the Zoo" and "In the Zoo 2" were great fun and had the bonus of concealing useful technical studies in the music so that young players could improve their technique without knowing they were working hard!Aleksey wondered how he could follow these books and decided to choose animals that few people even knew existed. So, in "Funny Animals", for violin and piano, we meet such creatures as the Panda Ant, the Aye-Aye and the Dumbo Octopus! The animals are introduced with texts and pictures by his friend Magdalena Hoffmann. Aleksey says that, if you only want to play the music, that's great but he provides lots of theatrical instructions for a stage performance. You might find yourself blowing kisses to the audience or playing while standing on one leg! If you have the nerve to do this and film yourself for YouTube he says you should mention his name and tag him and you will find yourself featured on his own homepage. Do this, he says, and your route to stardom is guaranteed! The music does not demand great technical ability from the player but maybe… on one leg? • U.S. Naval Aviation

    M. Hill Goodspeed

    Hardcover (Universe, April 19, 2011)
The definitive, official illustrated book on U.S. Naval Aviation, published in a fully updated and revised edition. On May 8, 1911, the Navy ordered its first airplanes and United States Naval Aviation was born. The Navy's aviation arm was founded on the same courage and spirit that still define its ranks: self-taught flier Eugene Ely, wearing a football helmet and a bicycle inner tube as a life preserver, became the first man to both take off and land on the deck of a ship. Over the next nine decades, Naval Aviation roared forward on the backs of the most advanced aircraft and well-trained aviators and flight crews in the world. Now, 100 years after its founding, the spirit and essence of United States Naval Aviation is celebrated for the first time in a definitive, magnificently illustrated, large-format book published in association with the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation. Written by an outstanding team, including historians, authors, and experts associated with the National Naval Aviation Museum and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, as well as several distinguished active and retired Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard officers, U.S. Naval Aviation has more than 350 pages of riveting and informative text and stories of the Naval Aviation experience. Essays on Naval Aviation history and today's aviators focus not only on the planes, helicopters, and aircraft carriers, but especially on the people that make it all work. The thoughtful incorporation of full-color and vintage photography, portraits, recruiting posters, and historically inspired paintings complements the text while adding the excitement that only spectacular illustrations can bring to a book. U.S. Naval Aviation enables the history of America's naval aviators to be cherished permanently in a handsome package that every pilot and aviation personnel will be proud to own and--with its unique medallion-inlaid cover--to display.
