    Louisa M. Alcott

Hardcover (Saalfield Publishing, Jan. 1, 1932)
Saalfield Publishing (Every Child's Library) [Published date: 1932]. Hard cover, 372 pp. 1932 edition. [From front Dust jacket flap] After a trip around the world with his niece and her friend, Phebe, Dr. Alec Campbell comes back to his New England home to find his boyish nephews grown to manhood and interested in the young ladies. The Campbell family is clannish, and the older members plan busily for a marriage that will keep its members united and its wealth intact. Archie and Charles, Mac and Steve are loyal, but Phebe's charm wins Archie who proposes to her. The strait-laced aunts rebel against the orphan girl, once a housemaid, and Phebc goes to the city to sing. Charlie is Rose's favorite, but the reckless fellow is fatally hurt in an accident. Then Mac—silent, serious Mac—comes out of his shell and woos Rose. Mac goes to the city to study, and Uncle Alec, while visiting him there, is stricken with a fever. Mac and Phebe save his life, and the entire family is brought to a better understanding after his illness.
