  • Jock of the Bushveld

    Sir James Percy Fitzpatrick

    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, July 6, 2018)
Jock of the Bushveld CHAPTER ONE. THE BACKGROUND. Of the people who live lonely lives, on the veld or elsewhere, few do so of their own free choice. Some there are shut off from all their kind-- souls sheathed in some film invisible, through which no thrill of sympathy may pass; some barred by their self-consciousness, heart hungry still, who never learned in childhood to make friends; some have a secret or a grief; some, thoughts too big or bad for comradeship. But most will charge to Fate the thoughtless choice, the chance, or hard necessity, that drew or drove them to the life apart; they know the lesson that was learned of old: "It is not good for man to be alone." Go out among them, ever moving on, whose white bones mark the way for others' feet--who shun the cities, living in the wilds, and move in silence, self-contained. Who knows what they think, or dream, or hope, or suffer? Who can know? For speech among that hard-schooled lot is but a half-remembered art.

From Espionage to Supernatural, From Crime To Suspense, each week readers can find what they need in the PRO SE THRILLER OF THE WEEK.The Out-OfTimers: Episode One-EARTHSHAKE BY MARK BARNARDThree people, each experts in their respective fields, and near masters in many things. For different reasons, they are considered to be not long for this world, living on borrowed time. They each have also been known to be risk takers, daredevils of a sort, so even without their own individual issues, they could, at any minute, put themselves in situations that could take them out. They are brought together as a group by a man known only as Mister Davies to form the most unique of teams. Working both on individual missions and as a group, The Out-Of-Timers are sent on jobs to basically confront evil, help those who need it, and save the world.Mysteries from the past may mean the end of the world today!Satellite photos show unusual structures, seemingly volcanic in nature, but potentially manmade, in several strategic portions of the Caribbean. Mister Davies provides his three person team with intel dating back to the 1960s Cuban Missile Crisis. Somewhat puzzling is that there have been no unusual amounts or types of ship traffic which might suggest the importation of materials needed to construct these. Then, again, there has been a marked spike in fish kills in the area, and a detectable rise in radioactivity. There have also been rumors of a number of deaths by radiation among European-based ‘humanitarian workers,’ in the indicated areas. It is up to the aged ex-spy, the terminally ill scientist, and the former cop with multiple prices on his head to find out what is going on!THE OUT-OF-TIMERS: EARTHSHAKE by Mark Barnard. Concept created by Tommy Hancock.Three Walking Death Sentences. They’ll Save The World…Until They Die Doing It.
  • On the Irrawaddy, A Story of the First Burmese War

    G. A. Henty

    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, Sept. 3, 2016)
George Alfred Henty was a notable novelist and war correspondent who wrote many short stories such as For the Temple, The Dragon and the Raven and In Freedom’s cause. He also wrote stories with a more historical approach, such as the currently reviewed “On the Irrawaddy : A story of the First Burmese War”. This novel follows the adventures of young protagonist Stanley as he embarks on a journey that will find him in the middle of the great conflict. Perhaps not as terrifying according to modern standards, the three Burmese Wars have become an example of a disastrous military campaign during which as many as 50 percent of army officers died in an attempt to conquer Burma with its royal Ava family as well as parts of India. During the conflict, more than 15,000 British, Burmese and Indian soldiers died. At the end of the third Burmese War, Britain had gained control of large areas in northern India as well as Burma. The story takes place during the First Burmese War. A young man by the name of Stanley embarks on a journey to find fortune and fame on the notorious yet wild and dangerous river Irrawaddy. Little does he know that he will be sucked into the conflict and that he will find himself in the middle of terrible events that will have far reaching consequences for many involved. The adventures on Burma’s beautiful Irrawaddy River are supplemented by historical, geographical and explanatory footnotes that will help readers understand more about the background of the story as well as geographical locations where action takes place. “On the Irrawaddy : A story of the First Burmese War” is a thrilling adventure story as well as a history lesson about one of the costliest wars of the 19th century.
  • The Mad King

    Edgar Rice Burroughs

    MP3 CD (IDB Productions, Jan. 1, 2016)
Enjoy a Fast-Paced Tale of Suspense and Adventure in The Mad KingThe Mad King is a somewhat uncommon story by Edgar Rice Burroughs, when compared to most of his work. While Burroughs' general approach is the same in including a strong hero who is filled with virtue and good intentions, the unfolding tale is quite eccentric and unique, while offering some meaningful insights about how it would later unfold right from the very start. The story is about a young American who visits the country of “Latha” together with his mother, who was born there. The story quickly turns from a delightful page turner to a truly suspenseful and fast-paced novel you won't be able to put down too easily. When our hero is mistakenly believed to be a missing, crazy king, and locked up, all depends on his skills and ingenuity. While his resourcefulness comes in handy, however, he soon realizes that there are other forces involved – namely his own heart, as he soon falls in love with a beautiful maiden. While interesting, easy to follow and easy to become addicted to, The Mad King may take some time to get used to. Burroughs' writing style is in line with everything you might expect from a novel written more than 100 years ago, and more, offering a complex plot line, a character that grows and evolves over the course of the book, and many surprising and quite fascinating turns of events that will keep you on your toes throughout the read. You may be more interested in a quiet, enjoyable story you can simply read in the evening close to the fireplace. Or you might rather be drawn to an exciting story that you simply can't put down, even if you wanted to. The Mad King is all this and more, exploring themes such as the success of endurance and resourcefulness in overcoming hardship, as well as a love story that will likely shake you up.
