  • The Communist Manifesto

    Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels

Paperback (Chiron Academic Press, Jan. 31, 2016)
THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO (originally Manifesto of the Communist Party) is an 1848 political pamphlet by German philosophers Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Commissioned by the Communist League and originally published in London (in the German language as Manifest der kommunistischen Partei) just as the revolutions of 1848 began to erupt, the Manifesto was later recognised as one of the world's most influential political manuscripts. It presents an analytical approach to the class struggle (historical and then-present) and the problems of capitalism and the capitalist mode of production, rather than a prediction of communism's potential future forms. It summarises Marx and Engels' theories about the nature of society and politics, that in their own words, "The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles." It also briefly features their ideas for how the capitalist society of the time would eventually be replaced by socialism, and then finally communism. (more on www.wisehouse-publishing.com)

  • The Jehol Fossils: The Emergence of Feathered Dinosaurs, Beaked Birds and Flowering Plants

Mee-Mann Chang, Pei-ji Chen, Yuan Wang, Yuan-qing Wang

Hardcover (Academic Press, Feb. 22, 2008)
No other single volume reference to the Jehol site and its fossils exists and nowhere is there such a collection of fine photos of the fossils concerned. This book has pieced together the most up-to-date information on the Jehol Biota, a place that has shown the world some of the most astonishing fossil finds including the first complete skeleton of Archaeopteryx in 1861, four-winged dinosaurs- many feathered ones, the first beaked bird, the first plants with flowers and fruits, and thousands of species of invertebrates. Authors shed new light on a number of interesting theoretical issues in evolutionary biology today, such as the origin and early evolution of some major taxonomic groups. The first two chapters give an inviting introduction to the Jehol Biota in terms of its history of study, its main components, its scientific importance, its geographical, geological and biostratigraphic framework, and its renowned fossil discoveries. Each of the remaining chapters deals with a particular organismal group of the Biota written by leading experts. The book is lavishly illustrated with nearly 280 illustrations, which include 200 photographs that show the diversity of the taxa and beauty of their preservation. The colored life restorations, elegantly done by some of China's most celebrated scientific illustrators, give a kiss of life to the dead bones. Although targeted primarily at an educated public, the book is also an invaluable source of information for students and professionals in paleontology, geology, evolutionary biology and science education in general.

Hardcover (Academic Press, June 15, 2020)
Spontaneous Pathology of the Laboratory Nonhuman Primate serves as a "go to" resource for all pathologists working on primates in safety assessment studies. In addition, it helps diagnostic veterinary pathologists rule out spontaneous non-clinical disease pathologies when assigning cause of death to species in zoological collections. Primate species included are rhesus, cynomolgus macaques and marmosets. Multi-authored chapters are arranged by organ system, thus providing the necessary information for continued research. Pathologists often face a lack of suitable reference materials or historical data to determine if pathologic changes they are observing in monkeys are spontaneous or a consequence of other treatments or factors. • Harry's Dream

Suzanne T. Saldarini, Inc. MindMend Media, Lou Simeone

Paperback (ORI Academic Press, Dec. 30, 2014)
Over one hundred years ago, Freud showed us that dreams are over-determined. Events from the previous day, on-going projects and interests, conversations, childhood memories and feelings attached to all of these come together to form our night-time dramas. The same could be said about any invention, including this short story for young children. Harry's Dream began with a real night-mare, was shaped by conversations, by interests and by Harry's memories. Finally, it was determined by the commitment at ORI Academic Press to connect psychoanalytic concepts to ordinary experience. Harry's Dream is Suzanne Saldarini's second book for children published by the ORI Academic Press. Her first book, About Dreams, was nominated for a prestigious 2013 Gradiva® Award from the National Association for Advancement of Psychoanalysis. Both books are included in Psychoanalytic Thought for Youth series. Harry's Dream is brief, vivid and, hopefully, meaningful to anyone who cares for pre-school children.

  • Flatland - A Romance of Many Dimensions

    Edwin Abbott

Hardcover (Chiron Academic Press, Dec. 29, 2017)
This special edition is a distinguished vintage reproduction, of the 1884 satirical novella Flatland, by the English schoolmaster Edwin Abbott. Meticulously elaborated by the editorial team of Chiron Academic Press in collaboration with the renowned literature publisher Edition l'Aleph (www.l-aleph.com), this special edition, pays particular attention to the very authentic details of the editorial of text and images, fine type setting, mise-en-page, production, and print. The result is a revival of the vintage for the 21st century's reader. Thus a unique reading experience for the book lovers and collectors of this genre. A recommended edition to libraries. Writing pseudonymously as "A Square," the book used the fictional two-dimensional world of Flatland to comment on the hierarchy of Victorian culture, but the novella's more enduring contribution is its examination of dimensions. The story describes a two-dimensional world occupied by geometric figures, whereof women are simple line-segments, while men are polygons with various numbers of sides. The narrator is a square, a member of the caste of gentlemen and professionals, who guides the readers through some of the implications of life in two dimensions. The Square dreams about a visit to a one-dimensional world (Lineland) inhabited by "lustrous points," and attempts to convince the realm's monarch of a second dimension; but is unable to do so. . . "One of the most imaginative, delightful and, yes, touching works of mathematics, this slender 1884 book purports to be the memoir of A. Square, a citizen of an entirely two-dimensional world." -The Washington Post Book World "Flatland has remained of interest for over a century precisely because of its ability to engage its readers on so many different planes in so many different dimensions."-Victorian Studies "This reprint of Abbott's Flatland adventures contains an Intro¬duction by Thomas Banchoff which is worth reading on its own. So if you don't have yet this book at home, go ahead and buy this edition."-Zentralblatt MATH In 1884, Edwin Abbott wrote a strange and enchanting novella called Flatland, in which a square who lives in a two-dimensional world comes to comprehend the existence of a third dimension but is unable to persuade his compatriots of his discovery. Through the book, Abbott skewered hierarchical Victorian values while simul¬taneously giving a glimpse of the mathematics of higher dimensions.-Science News
