  • The Observer's Book of Postage Stamps

    Anthony S. B. New

Hardcover (Frederick Warne & Co., Jan. 1, 1967)
Postage stamps have only been in existence the past 150 years or so. The author, an architect by profession, describes their birth and traces their development throughout the world by relating them wherever possible to their artistic and social context. He explains how they are produced, examines the characteristics of different printers and designers, and gives advice on methods of collecting. An unusual feature is the geographicallly arranged gazetteer of countries, which will assist in identifying stamps, in locating obscure places of origin, and in tracing the consequences of political upheavals-from the nineteenth-century mergings of German and Italian States to the latest proclamations of independence in Africa. The book has a helpful glossary and three indexes. There are 17 plates in full colour and 502 black and white illustrations. Mr. New concerns himself much more with aesthetics than with technicalities, and after reading his book both the novice and the collector of long standing will truly appreciate the art of postage stamp design.

  • The Further Tale of Peter Rabbit Book with Cd

    Emma Thompson

Paperback (Frederick Warne, July 30, 2013)
In a follow-up to the cherished original Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter, The Further Tale of Peter Rabbit sees Peter on the quest for adventure. Sneaking into Mr McGregor's garden to steal a lettuce, the naughty little rabbit finds himself in a picnic basket heading all the way to Scotland, where he meets the large but kindly Finlay McBurney, a distant cousin. Far away from his cousin, Benjamin Bunny, and the Lake District setting of Beatrix Potter's classic tale, Peter Rabbit gets all the adventure he was looking for as he encounters a giant radish and even takes part in the Highland Games. Emma Thompson, Oscar-winning actress and screen writer (Sense and Sensibility and Nanny McPhee), is a long time admirer of Beatrix Potter's tales. She has a talent for creating engaging narratives with a dry humour similar to Potter's own and is the perfect choice of author for this new Peter Rabbit tale. Emma was inspired to set the tale in Scotland by her knowledge of Beatrix's childhood holidays there. Accompanied by a story CD, narrated by Emma herself, this wonderfully whimsical tale is perfect for Peter Rabbit fans old and new.
