Twain's abundant humor waxes as freely as ever; this time, however, his amusement bears a more cynical cast, as he regards the grand tourist sights of 'Innocents' through older and more experienced eyes.

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, May 18, 2017)
A Tramp Abroad is a work of travel literature, including a mixture of autobiography and fictional events, by American author Mark Twain, published in 1880. The book details a journey by the author, with his friend Harris (a character created for the book, and based on his closest friend, Joseph Twichell), through central and southern Europe. While the stated goal of the journey is to walk most of the way, the men find themselves using other forms of transport as they traverse the continent. The book is the third of Mark Twain's five travel books and is often thought to be an unofficial sequel to the first one, The Innocents Abroad. As the two men make their way through Germany, the Alps, and Italy, they encounter situations made all the more humorous by their reactions to them. The narrator (Twain) plays the part of the American tourist of the time, believing that he understands all that he sees, but in reality understanding none of it.

Excerpt from A Tramp Abroad, Vol. 2 of 2He objected to the courier, and with some show of reason, since he was about to venture upon new and untried ground; but I thought he might as well learn how to take care of the courier now as later, therefore I enforced my point. I said that the trouble, delay, and inconvenience of traveling with a courier were balanced by the deep respect which a courier's presence commands, and I must insist that as much style be thrown into my journeys as possible.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Mark Twain plays the role of author, main protagonist and narrator in A Tramp Abroad – his account of his journeys through Germany, Italy and Switzerland. With accurate and beautifully designed descriptions of real locations in the Swiss and German Alps, charming tall tales the likes of which no one else can embellish quite to the same extent, and an insightful commentary on European life and culture, the book will surprise and delight you through its remarkably flowing narrative, detailed descriptions and at times hilarious passages. There's no doubt about the fact that Mark Twain always has something good to say, even through his lesser known or less well-received works. While this book is no Huckleberry Finn, its intuitively brilliant style and Twain's oftentimes deep insight on his perspective of Europe will undoubtedly keep most readers glued to their chairs to the very end. Also, with the author's unpredictable sense of adventure and rich storytelling talent, you never know where you'll end up, as you are slowly absorbed by the tale. With a good balance between humorous and serious passages that Twain alternates in his distinctive way, there won't really be any dull moments as you read through the book. From his account of the German language's peculiarities, to a hilarious story he recounts about his attempt to pretend to know a woman who seems to be very keen on asserting that she is an old acquaintance of his, the author takes us through a journey back in time and a tour of Europe that even the most imaginative of artists and storytellers wouldn't be able to come up with.Probably the only thing the book lacks is a few extra hundred pages that could have prolonged Twain's droll and delightful adventures, as he probes virtually every facet of the topics, places and circumstances he encounters throughout his journeys

Audio CD (Blackstone Audio, Inc., March 15, 2011)
Written by legendary author Mark Twain, A Tramp Abroad is widely considered to be one of the greatest books of all time. In April 1878, Mark Twain and his family traveled to Europe. Overloaded with creative ideas, Twain had hoped that the sojourn would spark his creativity enough to bring at least one of the books in his head to fruition. Instead, he wrote of his walking tour of Europe, describing his impressions of the Black Forest, the Matterhorn, and other attractions. Neglected for years, A Tramp Abroad sparkles with Twain's shrewd observations and highly opinionated comments on Old World culture and showcases his unparalleled ability to integrate humorous sketches, autobiographical tidbits, and historical anecdotes in a consistently entertaining narrative. Cast in the form of a walking tour through Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy, and England, A Tramp Abroad includes among its adventures a voyage by raft down the Neckar and an ascent of Mont Blanc by telescope, as well as the author's attempts to study art -- a wholly imagined activity Twain ''authenticated'' with his own wonderfully primitive pictures. This book reveals Mark Twain as a mature writer and is filled with brilliant prose, insightful wit, and Twain's unerring instinct for the truth.
