The seventh book in the line of stories set in the Land of Oz, The Patchwork Girl of Oz by L. Frank Baum features numerous characters that are already well-known to fans of Oz and introduces some new ones, too. The story is magical and delightful for readers of all ages – the characters are charming and the Land of Oz offers a lot to experience and to explore. The Patchwork Girl of Oz tells the story of Ojo the Unlucky, a Munchkin boy serving his uncle, Unc Nunkie. The two are suffering from hunger and they must get out of the dark forest, therefore they pay a visit to his Unc Nunkie’s friend, the Crooked Magician. During the visit they get introduced to one of the Magician’s creatures, a girl made entirely of quilt patches and stuffed with cotton and they also see how another invention of the magician, the Powder of Life animates whatever it is applied on. Unc Nunkie comes into contact with a potion made by his friend, the Liquid of Petrifaction and is turned to stone by it; therefore, Ojo must set out and search the Land of Oz for the five ingredients needed for making an antidote. During his quest, he is helped by the patchwork girl, but not only. Other inhabitants of the forest also join them, so Ojo and the girl get help from the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Woozy, even Dorothy herself. They manage to find four of the ingredients they need, but for finding the last one they need even more powerful help, so they must go to the Wizard of Oz. The story is not only about a wonderful, magical and also heroic quest – it is also a story of development that shows how Ojo becomes more mature with each and every adventure he goes through and also an entertaining and intriguing story with an important moral at the end.

    L. Frank Baum

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Sept. 5, 2016)
The Patchwork Girl of Oz by L. Frank Baum, is a children's novel, the 7th set in the Land of Oz. Characters include the Woozy, Ojo "the Unlucky", Unc Nunkie, Dr. Pipt, Scraps (the patchwork girl), and others. The book was first published on July 1, 1913, with illustrations by John R. Neill. In 1914, Baum adapted the book to film through his "Oz Film Manufacturing Company." In the previous Oz book, The Emerald City of Oz, magic was used to isolate Oz from all outside worlds. Baum did this to end the Oz series, but was forced to restart the series with this book due to financial hardships.[1] In the prologue, he explains how he managed to get another story about Oz, even though it is isolated from all other worlds. He explains that a child suggested he make contact with Oz with wireless telegraphy. Glinda, using her book that records everything that happens, is able to know that someone is using a telegraph to contact Oz, so she erects a telegraph tower and has the Shaggy Man, who knows how to make a telegraph reply, tell the story contained in this book to Baum.Ojo the very unlucky, is a young Munchkin boy who, devoted to life with his uncle Unc Nunkie in the wilderness but on the verge of starvation, goes to see a neighboring "magician" and old friend of Unc, Dr. Pipt. While there they see a demonstration of the Pipt-made Powder of Life, which animates any object it touches after saying the magic words. Unc Nunkie and Dr. Pipt's wife are also the sufferers of the consequences of another of the Doctor's inventions, the Liquid of Petrifaction, which turns them into solid marble statues.

But when an accident leaves beloved Unc Nunkie a motionless statue, it is up to Ojo to save him. In his search for the magic ingredients that will restore his uncle to life, Ojo is joined by the Patchwork Girl and by the conceited Glass Cat, who boasts of her hard ruby heart, the resourceful Shaggy Man, and the lovable block-headed Woozy, whose tail hairs are just one of the things Ojo needs to rescue Une Nunkie. As they travel to the Emerald City, home of the wise and powerful Ozma, they meet Dorothy, the kind and sensible girl from Kansas; the gallant Scarecrow; and, of course, Toto.
