  • The Warden

    Anthony Trollope

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Aug. 13, 2016)
Anthony Trollope's intense classic The Warden is the opening novel in his much-acclaimed Chronicles of Barsetshire series. First published in 1855, the novel places us in the the fictional county of Barsetshire. Septimus Harding, the wizened old warden of the local hospital, and precentor of the region's cathedral, is the main focus of the book. Septimus is aged and meek yet highly prosperous from the incomes of his position. The story portrays the events which occur after a pious and enthusiastic young reformer named John Bold enters upon the scene determined to make the locality's charitable endeavours more accountable. This includes the difference between the high salary of Septimus and the actual giving embarked upon by the institutions the elderly man represents. Frequently praised as one of Trollope's best novels, particularly within his general writings concerned the clerical trade, The Warden carries themes of change and upheaval which maintain their relevance to this day. However the characterisation, whereby the senior church figure Archdeacon Grantly and the firebrand reformer John Bold are both depicted as greatly flawed, has raised debate over the author's intentions and personal beliefs in the matter of organised religion.
