The Last of the Mohicans, by James Fenimore Cooper, is an American classic. Part adventure, part romance, part historical fiction, Cooper tells a cinematic story set in a frontier wilderness, the substantial forests and mountains of what would later become New York State. The novel begins as English Colonel Munro's daughters, Cora and Alice, set out across the forest wilderness to visit their father at a neighboring fort. They are accompanied by a Major Heyward and an Indian guide, a Huron named Magua. Little do they know that Magua is actually a traitor who is leading them in the wrong direction. Along the way, their paths cross with Hawkeye, a white scout who travels with Chingachgook and his son, Uncas, the last members of the Mohican Indian tribe. Hawkeye reveals to the group that their guide has betrayed them. Hawkeye and the Mohicans prepare to capture Magua, but unfortunately, he escapes. Hawkeye and the Mohicans try to escort the group to safety, but are thwarted when the Huron's kidnap the Major and the Colonel's daughters. Daring rescues, love triangles, and racial conflict follow throughout the rest of the story. The Mohicans and the English are in constant peril as they are pursued by the Huron tribe, the Delaware tribe, and their French adversaries. Considered Cooper's masterpiece, The Last of the Mohicans details the brutal aspects of a culture war. Each volume features the white Indian scout Hawkeye, who is also known throughout the series as Natty Bumppo. The Last of the Mohicans is certainly James Fenimore Cooper's, and Hawkeye's, most memorable story.
