First Published - 1916. Carthoris falls in love with Thuvia, princess of Ptarth, who was rescued by John Carter from the Therns. Thuvia is stolen away by Astok, Prince of Dusar, Ptarth's rival. Carthoris follows her across Barsoom and rescues her, encountering some strange and fascinating creatures. Thuvia, unfortunately, is already betrothed to Kulan Tith, Jeddak of Kaol, ally of Helium.

First edition bound in olive green cloth with black design and lettering. Ten sepia toned plates by J. Allen St. John. A VG copy. The cloth on the edge of the rear board has a light orange cast as though another book's colored cover has bled over to the edge of this book. There is a very slight lift to the same board so possibly the book was exposed to moisture which would explain the bleed over. The book is otherwise quite clean, tight and unmarked. Comes with a fine facsimile dj.

This is a pre-1923 historical reproduction that was curated for quality. Quality assurance was conducted on each of these books in an attempt to remove books with imperfections introduced by the digitization process. Fourth Book of the John Carter of Mars Series John Carter of Helium has rescued Thuvia, princess of Ptarth, from the Therns and now Carthoris, John Carter's son, has fallen in love with her. But Thuvia is stolen away by Astok, Prince of Dusar, Ptarth's rival. Carthoris tracks Thuvia across Barsoom and rescues her only to find she is already betrothed to Kulan Tith, Jeddak of Kaol, an ally of Helium. "Thuvia, Maid of Mars" was first published as "Carthoris" in All-Story Weekly (April 8, 15, 22, 1916). The first hardcover edition was published by A.C. McClurg & Co., October 30, 1920. The original edition was bound in an olive green cloth with black lettering on the spine and front. The dust jacket, in color was by J. Allen St. John. A frontispiece, and nine illustrations were done by J. Allen St. John. The text of this edition is from the 1920 A.C. McClurg edition. The front cover picture of this edition is a restored copy of the front of the original dust jacket. All the original interior illustrations are reproduced in this edition.

Fortunately, though, Carthoris is every bit the swashbuckler that his father is. Princess Thuvia of Ptarth has been kidnapped by the vile Prince Astok of Dusar -- an abduction which nearly causes a world war on Barsoom. Young Carthoris, in his quest to free his beloved princess, runs across deserted cities, a forgotten kingdom, banths (10-legged Barsoomian lions), ethereal warriors, much swordplay, giant white apes, and on and on. . . . highly recommended.
