About The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss The Swiss Family Robinson (German: Der Schweizerische Robinson) is a novel by Johann David Wyss, first published in 1812, about a Swiss family shipwrecked in the East Indies en route to Port Jackson, Australia.Written by Swiss pastor Johann David Wyss and edited by his son Johann Rudolf Wyss and illustrated by his son Johann Emmanuel Wyss, the novel was intended to teach his four sons about family values, good husbandry, the uses of the natural world and self-reliance. Wyss' attitude toward education is in line with the teachings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and many of the episodes have to do with Christian-oriented moral lessons such as frugality, husbandry, acceptance, cooperation, etc. The adventures are presented as a series of lessons in natural history and the physical sciences, and resemble other, similar educational books for children in this period, such as Charlotte Turner Smith's Rural Walks: in Dialogues intended for the use of Young Persons (1795), Rambles Further: A continuation of Rural Walks (1796), A Natural History of Birds, intended chiefly for young persons (1807). But the novel differs in that it is modeled on Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, a genuine adventure story,[1] and presents a geographically impossible array of large mammals (including tigers, brown bears, leopards, jackals, hyenas, cheetahs, wolves, moose, lions, rhinos, hippos, walruses, elephants, giraffes, monkeys, zebras, and onagers). and plants (including the bamboos, cassavas, cinnamon trees, coconut palm trees, fir trees, flax, Myrica cerifera, rice, rubber plant potatoes, sago palms, and an entirely fictitious kind of sugarcane) that probably could never have existed together on a single island for the children's education, nourishment, clothing and convenience.

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, April 7, 2014)
Johann David Wyss (March 4, 1743 - January 11, 1818) was a Swiss pastor who earned lasting fame for writing The Swiss Family Robinson, a novel inspired by Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe. While Crusoe was a lone castaway, The Swiss Family Robinson was written to have a father figure impart wisdom to his children, teaching them important lessons. The Swiss Family Robinson involves a family being shipwrecked, allowing the father to teach his four sons about Christian values and morality, including naturalism and self-reliance. The influence of Enlightenment thinkers like Rousseau is evident in the writings of the Swiss pastor. The family encounters several adventures, with each one teaching the children certain lessons. Today the novel is considered a classic of Western literature.

  • Swiss Family Robinson - Illustrated Version: The 1879 Translation of the original German story by Johann David Wyss

    Johann David Wyss, Lisa Shea

Paperback (Independently published, Dec. 20, 2019)
Long before the days of Twilight and The Maze Runner, the adventure story for teens and adults alike was Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss. This exciting tale was based on Robinson Crusoe, which was popular at the time. And Robinson Crusoe had been based on a true story. So it shows how everything is based on something else which came before. There is nothing new under the sun.Swiss Family Robinson was first published in 1812 in German. In the tale, a family from Switzerland was shipwrecked on their way to Australia. The book became popular. In 1814 it was published in English. In 1824 it was released in French. Soon it was being enjoyed around the globe. Keep in mind that each translation would differ from the previous. A translator does their best to keep the sense of the story, but because language structures differ they don’t generally just take a verbatim one-word-after-another translation. They give the gist of the scene but in “proper English”. That means if you read ten different translations the stories will all differ from each other in phrasing and dialogue. This translation here was done by William Henry Giles Kingston in 1879.Johann’s aim in his original German-language story was to make a fun adventure that children could read and learn from. He didn’t worry much about realism. This island that the Robinson family landed on is highly implausible in terms of what it holds. Still, the adventure itself is fun to explore.Modern readers with Google at their fingertips are probably a bit more attentive to issues of accuracy. It’s a bit funny that the “New Edition” released in 1852 claims: “The descriptions of the different animals, their natures and habits, the uses of different plants, and the natural productions of the earth, are delineated with the utmost fidelity.” Apparently even those editors needed to do some research.Robinson wasn’t even supposed to be the family’s name in the story. It’s not a Swiss name. The German title was supposed to indicate that this was a Swiss family which was marooned in the style of Robinson Caruso.Even in the 1800s, parodies were being written about this story.I reformatted the text to work better in both ebook and modern-sized paperback formats.I also updated the spelling in many places to use the modern American version of the spelling. I updated the quote usage to be American style. There are enough archaic terms in here to stumble over as it is.Note that the text talks of children drinking wine. At the time this was normal. Water was unsanitary. The alcohol in wine made it safe to drink. It was generally mild in intoxication effect.I’ve added other notes in the story to help clarify archaic language. That being said, let me know if you spot any updates or changes!
