  • The Metamorphosis

    Franz Kafka, Lily Mathew

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Jan. 12, 2017)
One morning, after a worried dream, Gregorio Samsa woke up transformed into a monstrous insect. It had many legs that were moving without he could control them and everything was indicating that it was not a question of a dream: the clock was indicating the six and average and the train was going out at five o'clock.
  • The Metamorphosis

    Franz Kafka, Ralph Cosham

MP3 CD (Blackstone Audio, Inc., June 1, 2011)
[This is the MP3CD audiobook format.] ''One morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from anxious dreams, he discovered that in bed he had been changed into a monstrous verminous bug.'' With this startling, bizarre, yet surprisingly funny first sentence, Kafka begins his masterpiece, The Metamorphosis. It is the story of a young traveling salesman who, transformed overnight into a giant, beetle-like insect, becomes an object of disgrace to his family, an outsider in his own home, a quintessentially alienated man. Rather than being surprised at the transformation, the members of his family despise it as an impending burden upon themselves. A harrowing--though absurdly comic--meditation on human feelings of inadequacy, guilt, and isolation, The Metamorphosis has taken its place as one of the most widely read and influential works of twentieth-century fiction. As W. H. Auden wrote, ''Kafka is important to us because his predicament is the predicament of modern man.''
  • The Metamorphosis

    Franz Kafka

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Oct. 7, 2014)
The Metamorphosis (German: Die Verwandlung) is a novella by Franz Kafka, first published in 1915. It has been cited as one of the seminal works of fiction of the 20th century and is studied in colleges and universities across the Western world. The story begins with a traveling salesman, Gregor Samsa, waking to find himself transformed (metamorphosed) into a large, monstrous insect-like creature. The cause of Samsa's transformation is never revealed, and Kafka himself never gave an explanation. The rest of Kafka's novella deals with Gregor's attempts to adjust to his new condition as he deals with being burdensome to his parents and sister, who are repulsed by the horrible, verminous creature Gregor has become.

  • The Metamorphosis

    Franz Kafka, Ian Johnston

    Paperback (Infinity, Aug. 7, 2013)
The Metamorphosis, first published in 1915, is the most famous of Kafka's works, along with The Trial and The Castle. The story begins when a traveling salesman, Gregor Samsa, wakes up to find himself transformed into a giant insect. Curiously, his condition does not arouse surprise in his family, who merely despise it as an impending burden. As with all of Kafka's works, The Metamorphosis is open to a wide range of interpretations. Most obvious are themes relating to society's treatment of those who are different, the loneliness of isolation, and the absurdity of the human condition.
