From a lofty perch Tarzan viewed the village of thatched huts across the intervening plantation. He saw that at one point the forest touched the village, and to this spot he made his way, lured by a fever of curiosity to behold animals of his own kind, and to learn more of their ways and view the strange lairs in which they lived. His savage life among the fierce wild brutes of the jungle left no opening for any thought that these could be aught else than enemies. Similarity of form led him into no erroneous conception of the welcome that would be accorded him should he be discovered by these, the first of his own kind he had ever seen. Tarzan of the Apes was no sentimentalist. He knew nothing of the brotherhood of man. All things outside his own tribe were his deadly enemies... ―from Chapter X: “The Fear-Phantom” Edgar Rice Burroughs created one of the most iconic figures in American pop culture, Tarzan of the Apes, and it is impossible to overstate his influence on entire genres of popular literature in the decades after his enormously winning pulp novels stormed the public’s imagination. Tarzan of the Apes, first published in 1912, is the first installment of Burroughs’ tales of the ape-man, which would expand to encompass more than two-dozen books. Here, an English boy orphaned in Africa is raised by apes, becoming a fearsome creature of the jungle until he discovers his true identity as John Clayton, Lord Greystoke, and make his first tentative forays back into human civilization, through his love for the only human woman he has ever seen, Jane Porter. American novelist EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS (1875–1950) wrote dozens of adventure, crime, and science-fiction novels that are still beloved today, including At the Earth’s Core (1914), The Beasts of Tarzan (1916), A Princess of Mars (1917), The Land That Time Forgot (1924), and Pirates of Venus (1934). He is reputed to have been reading a comic book when he died.

Soon, Tarzan is forced to question his place in the world, and ultimately decide between the world he knows, and the world of his kind.JaneThe only female student in Cambridge University’s medical program, Jane Porter is far more comfortable in a lab coat dissecting corpses than she is in a corset and gown sipping afternoon tea. A budding paleoanthropologist, Jane dreams of traveling the globe in search of fossils that will prove the evolutionary theories of her scientific hero, Charles Darwin. When dashing American explorer Ral Conrath invites Jane and her father to join an expedition deep into West Africa, she can hardly believe her luck. Tarzan has been called one of the best-known literary characters in the world. In addition to literature, the character has appeared in films, radio, television, comic strips, and comic books. Burroughs considered other names for the character, including "Zantar" and "Tublat Zan," before he settled on "Tarzan. • Tarzan of the Apes

    Edgar Rice Burroughs

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Nov. 16, 2016)
This is the first book in the famous Tarzan series and has lead to a great number of sequels (over 25), films and comics. The title character Tarzan is the child of aristocratic parents, orphaned in the jungle and raised by apes. Tarzan thrives in the jungle, in large part due to his intelligence. The author Edgar Rice Burroughs has the superiority of aristocratic blood as a theme throughout his novels and Tarzan is naturally a beneficiary of this prejudice. The reader should remember that racism and white superiority was still a respectable belief at the time this novel was written, so some opinions common then are distasteful now. After teaching himself to read Tarzan learns of his origins and has various struggles against native Africans and the jealous alpha male of his ape family. His life is changed forever however after the arrival of the first white people Tarzan has ever seen in the jungle, including the beautiful Jane.Tarzan's exploits are extreme and fantastic, yet the skill of Edgar Rice Burroughs makes them believable in the context of this fabulous story. There is a reason Tarzan made such an impact on popular culture and readers of this book will discover it for themselves.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
