Talent, success and acknowledgement do not guarantee happiness in private life. If you are a very good doctor, it doesn't mean that you can save your relatives from illnesses and death. A young and famous doctor Austin Sloper wasn't able to save his first baby. His beloved wife gifted him a boy, but the infant lived only for a few days. Two years later his wife bore a girl. The more the girl was growing, the more her father was getting disappointed. Catherine was not so beautiful as her mother and did not show great intelligence as her father. Washington Square is the story of Catherine Sloper, a young heiress who is wooed by Morris Townsend, a handsome gentleman who is more interested in Catherine's inheritance than he is in her. When the two get engaged against the wishes of her stubborn father, Catherine must make a choice between the only man she will ever love and the wealth that she will inherit. Named for the upscale area of New York in which the novel is set, Washington Square is a classic examination of social class in mid-nineteenth-century New York.

Paperback (Independently published, July 8, 2019)
Washington Square by Henry James is the story of the gentle, dull Catherine Sloper who falls for the ambivalent Morris Townsend, who her father believes is a fortune hunter. When Catherine's father refuses to countenance the marriage and threatens to disinherit her if she proceeds, the dutiful Catherine is unable to choose between her father and the man of her dreams. Often compared to Austen for the precision and elegance of the prose Washington Square is a beautiful tragicomic story that is one of James' bestloved novels.

Excerpt from Washington SquareIt was an element in Doctor Sloper's reputation that his learning and his skill were very evenly balanced; he was What you might call a scholarly doctor, and yet there was nothing abstract in his remedies - he always ordered you to take something. Though he was felt to be extremely thorough, he was not uncomfortably theoretic; and if he some times explained matters rather more minutely than might seem of use to the patient, he never went so far (like some practitioners one had heard of) as to trust to the explanation alone, but always left behind him an inscrutable prescription. There were some doctors that left the prescription without offering any explanation at all; and he did not belong to that class either, which was after all the most vulgar. It will be seen that I am describing a clever man; and this is really the reason why Doctor Sloper had be come a local celebrity.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Paperback (Independently published, Sept. 25, 2019)
    - One of Henry James' most popular tales, Washington Square is the spellbinding tale of a handsome young man wooing the rather plain daughter of a wealthy doctor. Suspecting that money is driving the young man's keen interest, the doctor forbids their marriage. His meddling sister then tries to intervene on the young man's behalf and the intriguing story becomes yet more twisted and unpredictable.- Just as accessible and enjoyable for today's modern readers as it would have been when first published over a century ago, the novel is one of the great works of English and American literature and continues to be widely read throughout the world.- This meticulous edition from Heritage Illustrated Publishing is a faithful reproduction of the original text.

Washington Square I DURING a portion of the first half of the present century, and more particularly during the latter part of it, there flourished and practised in the city of New York a physician who enjoyed perhaps an exceptional share of the consideration which, in the United States, has always been bestowed upon distinguished members of the medical profession. This profession in America has constantly been held in honour, and more successfully than elsewhere has put forward a claim to the epithet of “liberal.” In a country in which, to play a social part, you must either earn your income or make believe that you earn it, the healing art has appeared in a high degree to combine two recognised sources of credit. It belongs to the realm of the practical, which in the United States is a great recommendation; and it is touched by the light of science—a merit appreciated in a community in which the love of knowledge has not always been accompanied by leisure and opportunity. It was an element in Dr. Sloper’s reputation that his learning and his skill were very evenly balanced; he was what you might call a scholarly doctor, and yet there was nothing abstract in his remedies—he always ordered you to take something. Though he was felt to be extremely thorough, he was not uncomfortably theoretic, and if he sometimes explained matters rather more minutely than might seem of use to the patient, he never went so far (like some practitioners one has heard of) as to trust to the explanation alone, but always left behind him an inscrutable prescription. Unabridged (100% Original content) Font adjustments & biography included Illustrated About Washington Square by Henry James Washington Square is a short novel by Henry James. Originally published in 1880 as a serial in Cornhill Magazine and Harper's New Monthly Magazine, it is a structurally simple tragicomedy that recounts the conflict between a dull but sweet daughter and her brilliant, unemotional father. The plot of the novel is based upon a true story told to James by his close friend, British actress Fanny Kemble. The book is often compared with Jane Austen's work for the clarity and grace of its prose and its intense focus on family relationships. James was not a great fan of Washington Square itself. He tried to read it over for inclusion in the New York Edition of his fiction (1907–1909) but found that he could not, and the novel was not included. Other readers, though, have sufficiently enjoyed the book to make it one of the more popular works of the Jamesian canon.
