    Derace Kingsley works for a cosmetics company and wants to locate his missing wife. Philip Marlowe is given the job. Crystal sent a telegram saying she was going for a Mexican divorce. But Chris Lavery doesn't know anything. Across the street Dr. Almore watches Marlowe. So Marlowe drives to Little Fawn Lake to inspect Crystal's last known location. He talks to the caretaker Bill Chess, and learns Chess' wife Muriel left him the same day. They walk around the lake and onto the little pier. There is something below the water, Chess' missing wife is found ! Sheriff Patton questions Bill Chess . Birdie Keppel, the part time newspaper reporter, talks to Marlowe. Six weeks earlier a man was looking for a woman whose photograph resembled Muriel . Sheriff Patton knew his country and where to look. Muriel's car was hidden away in shed . Marlowe searched the cabin again and found a clue . Marlowe returned to talk to Lavery, but he wasn't home. A woman came up the steps, talked to Marlowe, then ran out. Marlowe then found Lavery, but he didn't say anything . We learn more about Dr. Almore's wife and local politics . The police arrive at Lavery's house . Marlowe gets another lead . The parents of Dr. Almore's dead wife tell Marlowe about their suspicions . He hears the name "Mildred" as Dr. Almore's missing nurse. We learn more facts about the case . Marlowe brings money to Crystal and learns what happened . Then he is knocked out (Chapter 32).Crystal won't talk now. The police arrive but Marlowe left before this. Marlowe tells Lt. Degarmo what he surmised about Mildred and what she did . There is more about Crystal's fate ! Marlowe surmises what happened when Crystal and Muriel both disappeared at the same time . Marlowe guesses what happened when he was sapped and receives confirmation of his guess (Amazon customer)

The book was written shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor and makes several references to America's recent involvement in World War II.About the AuthorRaymond Chandler was born in Chicago in 1888 but moved to England with his mother when he was twelve after his parents' divorce. He was educated at Dulwich College, London and studied international law in France and Germany. He published a number of poems and essays in local papers and worked as a reporter, essayist and book reviewer before emigrating to the United States in 1912. After serving for the Canadian Army during the First World War he tried a variety of jobs before becoming a bookkeeper and auditor for Dabney Oil Syndicate. In 1924 he married Cissy Pascal. When Chandler lost his job during the Great Depression, he decided to devote himself to writing. He began writing short stories forBlack Mask Magazine, the best known of the 'hard-boiled' school of pulp fiction magazines. In 1939 he published his first novelThe Big Sleep to instant acclaim in Britain and the US, introducing the world to his iconic private eye, Philip Marlowe. Marlowe went on to star in almost all of Raymond Chandler's major works and withFarewell My Lovely (1940) and The Long Goodbye (1954) Chandler cemented his reputation as a giant of American popular culture and master of a style of detective fiction that would be widely admired and imitated. Chandler turned to screenwriting in 1943 with Double Indemnity and worked closely with director Billy Wilder. He continued to write for Hollywood for the next four years, during the heyday of the Hollywood studio system, receiving an Oscar nomination forThe Blue Dahlia (1946). In 1946 Chandler received an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America for screenplay and in 1954 for novel writing. During the last year of his life he was made President of the Mystery Writers of America. He died from pneumonia in 1959.
