  • The Complete Folk & Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm

Wilhelm Grimm, Jacob Grimm, Margaret Hunt

    language (, April 24, 2017)
The Brothers Grimm are probably the best known story tellers in the world. Many years have passed since the time Jackob and Wilhelm Grimm released their "Children's and household tales". The first Volume of Grimms' fairy tales was released in 1812, and the second - in 1814. The first edition and was very modest, both in appearance and capacity - there were only 83 fairy tales, compared to the 200 we know today. The foreword to the collection was signed by the Brothers Grimm on October 18th, 1812. The booklet was highly appraised in this era of spectacular bloom of romance, when the German national consciousness was formed and nationalist aspirations were awakening.Brothers Grimm kept updating their collection with newly gathered and recorded fairy tales. In their lifetime the fairy tale collection was translated into almost all European languages, while the German version already had six editions. This was The Grimms first experience of scientific studies and process of folklore and their first major success. For their exceptional scientific achievements modern researchers call them "fathers and founders of German philology."

  • Grimm's Fairy Tales

Jacob Grimm, Wilhelm Grimm, Margaret Hunt

language (Dover Publications, March 5, 2012)
Early in the nineteenth century, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm compiled a collection of stories to preserve the folklore of their native Germany. Forty-three of them—fairy tales, some deliciously dark, that have bewitched readers for generations—are gathered here. Translated into more than 150 languages, these well-loved narratives brim with fearless heroes, humble and hardworking heroines, and treacherous villains, exploring themes of innocence, curiosity, and revenge. Rich in detail, lyrical in phrase, these masterful translations by Margaret Hunt capture the flavor of the original Grimm tales. Here are classics such as “Rapunzel,” “Hansel and Grethel,” “Thumbling,” “Cinderella,” “The Bremen Town-Musicians,” “The Wolf and the Seven Little Kids,” “The Fisherman and His Wife,” and “Little Snow-White.” These cherished fables, created from centuries’-old oral tradition, await rediscovery by children and adults alike.
  • Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales

Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm, Edgar Taylor

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, July 21, 2017)
The Brothers Grimm, Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm (1786-1859), were born in Hanau, near Frankfurt, in the German state of Hesse. Throughout their lives they remained close friends, and both studied law at Marburg University. Jacob was a pioneer in the study of German philology, and although Wilhelm’s work was hampered by poor health the brothers collaborated in the creation of a German dictionary, not completed until a century after their deaths. But they were best (and universally) known for the collection of over two hundred folk tales they made from oral sources and published in two volumes of ‘Nursery and Household Tales’ in 1812 and 1814. Although their intention was to preserve such material as part of German cultural and literary history, and their collection was first published with scholarly notes and no illustration, the tales soon came into the possession of young readers. This was in part due to Edgar Taylor, who made the first English translation in 1823, selecting about fifty stories ‘with the amusement of some young friends principally in view.’ They have been an essential ingredient of children’s reading ever since.
